After a national debate which spilled over at least once into large controversy, Brazil has selected director Kleber Mendon\u00e7a Filho<\/a>\u2019s \u201870s-set thriller \u201cThe Secret Agent<\/a>\u201d as its official entry for the best international feature film category at the 98th Academy Awards.<\/p>\n

The submission was announced Monday by the Brazilian Film Academy after a decision made by a 15-member selection committee.<\/p>\n

A Cannes winner headlining \u201cNarcos<\/a>\u201dstar Wagner Moura<\/a>, \u201cThe Secret Agent<\/a>\u201d beat out the other two main contenders, \u201cManas<\/a>,\u201d the feature debut of Marianna Brennand<\/a>, and \u201cThe Blue Trail<\/a>,\u201d a tale of later life awakening by Gabriel Mascar\u00f3<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Coming off the country\u2019s first Oscar for last year\u2019s moving drama \u201cI\u2019m Still Here<\/a>\u201d from Walter Salles<\/a>, until the end of last month, pundits and industry professionals were sure the committee would put forward \u201cThe Secret Agent<\/a>,\u201d acquired by Neon<\/a>.<\/p>\n
