A representative for Ballerini confirmed to People<\/a> Sunday that the country musician and Stokes, an actor best known for his starring role on Netflix<\/a>\u2019s \u201cOuter Banks<\/a>,\u201d had split. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re two adults who gave it their all and tried to do everything they could to make it work, but ultimately couldn\u2019t,\u201d a source close to the couple told the outlet. \u201cIt happens.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Still, the news caught many fans off-guard, given that Stokes had acknowledged Ballerini\u2019s 32nd birthday with a carousel of sweet photos<\/a> on Instagram just two days prior.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cAlthough you keep saying you\u2019re not excited for 32, id say I\u2019m lookin forward to more of this,\u201d the caption read. \u201cHappy birthday my love.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Fans were quick to point out the curious timing of Stokes\u2019 post in the comments. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

About a month later, Ballerini appeared on the \u201cCall Her Daddy\u201d podcast<\/a> where she acknowledged she was \u201chaving fun\u201d after her divorce and confirmed she\u2019d slid into Stokes\u2019 DMs. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve never really dated; I don\u2019t know how it works. I\u2019m like, \u2018Let\u2019s just put ourselves out there; let\u2019s just vibe.\u2019 And it\u2019s been fun,\u201d she explained. \u201cI\u2019ve never seen his show, but I just knew of him, and I just swan-dove right on in.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Around the same time, Stokes told People<\/a> that he and Ballerini had been \u201cspending some time together.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
