In the end, the heart triumphed over the head. Though it headed into the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards with a commanding 27 nominations<\/a>, the Apple TV+ drama Severance was ultimately left on the outie looking in as HBO Max’s The Pitt took home the Best Drama Series statuette. That race had been the one lingering question mark among the top categories, with The Studio winning Best Comedy Series and Adolescence taking Best Limited Series as Gold Derby users and editors alike predicted.<\/p>\n It’s not like The Pitt’s victory was a complete shock, though \u2014 certainly not on the level of, say, Jeff Hiller<\/strong> winning over Harrison Ford<\/strong> for Best Comedy Supporting Actor<\/a> or Andor’s Dan Gilroy<\/strong> Force-fully wresting the Best Drama Writing statuette away from both Severance and The Pitt. The medical drama’s fortunes had been rising recently, especially after a Best Drama Casting win<\/a> at the Creative Arts Emmys last weekend, an honor that correctly predicts the Best Drama Series victor 70 percent of the time. This year, that casting honor<\/a> ended up trumping total nomination count<\/a> in determining the champion across the board.<\/p>\n More from Gold Derby<\/strong><\/p>\n Still, it should be noted that Severance did win more Emmys overall than The Pitt, taking home eight statuettes to its rival’s five, including Best Drama Actress for Britt Lower<\/strong><\/a> and a history-making Best Drama Supporting Actor win for Tramell Tillman<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n But The Pitt had several factors working in its favor<\/a> as it marched toward the top prize, including its roots in broadcast television, an L.A. shooting location, and positive messaging about America’s healthcare workers \u2014 individuals that the cast and crew made sure to salute at every opportunity. That disciplined campaign overcame Severance’s ingeniously viral stunts, with The Pitt speaking directly to an industry with serious concerns about its future.<\/p>\n With the winners now enshrined in the history books, here we catalogue some of the other key takeaways from this Emmy season.<\/p>\n Most of the drama wins were shared between Severance and The Pitt, but there were two categories where that match-up resulted in vote split scenarios that benefitted other shows. Take Best Drama Directing where those top two contenders each had two nods apiece. Gold Derby voters calculated that Severance’s epic Season 2 finale, “Cold Harbor,” would end up with a slim majority of votes in that four-way fight, but instead Slow Horses galloped into the winner’s circle via the outside track. While the acclaimed Apple TV+ drama ranked dead last on our leaderboard, it clearly had enough of a fanbase in the TV Academy to carve out a path to victory between The Pitt and Severance.<\/p>\n Similarly, Best Drama Writing saw “Cold Harbor” going up against a pair of Pitt hours in a three-way fight for first. That left enough of a gap for Andor’s TV Academy fanbase to slip the Star Wars series some Emmy love; that scenario was more plausible to Gold Derby predictors, with the Disney+ show ranking third on our leaderboard. If Severance and The Pitt had only one nomination in both of these categories, a spoiler may have had a harder time breaking through. Instead, blocks were able to coalesce around shows with single episodes in the running.<\/p>\n As with the Oscars, the acting branch is the largest group voting in the Emmys, making them the determining factor in many races. So it’s fair to credit Hiller’s fellow thespians with his upset victory over Ford in Best Comedy Supporting Actor as well as Stephen Graham<\/strong> finishing ahead of Colin Farrell<\/strong> for Best Limited\/Movie Actor. Heading into Emmy night, the presumption was that Ford and Farrell’s movie star status would power them across the finish line. Instead, those statuettes went to the kind of working television actors prevalent across the TV Academy.<\/p>\n In another sign of the power of the actors’ block (not to mention the aforementioned vote splitting issues), The White Lotus failed to win any of its acting nods with Best Drama Supporting Actress instead going to The Pitt’s Katherine LaNasa<\/strong> and Best Drama Supporting Actor awarded to Severance’s Tramell Tillman<\/strong>. Mike White<\/strong>‘s drama is nothing if not an actor’s showcase \u2014 one that most performers eagerly move halfway around the world to be a part of \u2014 but absent a Jennifer Coolidge<\/strong>, the show’s Emmy fortunes now seem diminished.<\/p>\n As The Studio chugged along through awards season, numerous flags were raised suggesting that a derailment could be looming for the Apple TV+ Hollywood satire. Was it too inside baseball? Sure. Isn’t Seth Rogen<\/strong> a better writer and director than an actor? Arguably, yes. Would the real-world studio figures parodied on the show really want to see it rewarded? Maybe… maybe not.<\/p>\n In the end, though, nothing could slow down The Studio’s race into Emmy history with a record-setting 13 statuettes<\/a> across multiple comedy categories, led by Rogen’s landmark four Emmy win<\/a>. Even the most vulnerable-seeming category \u2014 Rogen’s Best Comedy Actor bid \u2014 ended decisively in the show’s favor, indicating that voters truly believed the series represented the apex of TV comedy in 2025. That kind of enthusiasm couldn’t be dimmed by any argument about how it might play outside of Hollywood or how much of Rogen’s act is actually acting.<\/p>\n Meanwhile, the juggernaut that was Adolescence made a near-clean sweep of the Limited Series portion of the evening, easily eclipsing its nearest rival, The Penguin. While the HBO Max series leads the overall Emmy count by nine to eight courtesy of its Creative Arts prizes, only Best Limited\/Movie Actress nominee Cristin Milioti<\/strong> accepted a statuette on Sunday, with her costar, Farrell, losing to Graham.<\/p>\n Part of the secret to Netflix’s success in this category in recent years is building limited series around subject matter that’s got a real-world hook, from the road rage incidents that drove Beef to the supposedly autobiographical stalking story that made Baby Reindeer an instant binge-watch. With its beyond-timely commentary on social media’s impact on its youngest users, Adolescence took over the cultural conversation from the moment it debuted, whereas The Penguin’s comic book roots were never far from the chatter around that series.<\/p>\n With a few notable exceptions \u2014 like Jean Smart<\/strong>‘s fourth straight Best Comedy Actress win for Hacks \u2014 incumbency wasn’t rewarded this particular Emmy cycle. Instead, voters decisively embraced new or previously unrewarded nominees. Both The Pitt and The Studio are Season 1 wonders and each of the non-Smart acting winners \u2014 including her Hacks costar Hannah Einbinder<\/strong> as well as The Pitt’s Noah Wyle<\/strong> and Severance’s Britt Lower<\/strong> \u2014 had never won an Emmy before. It’s yet another reminder that we’ve come a long way away from the days when a Frasier or a West Wing could expect to win over and over and over again.<\/p>\n At the same time, familiarity still leads to repeat nominations for shows that used to be able to count on Emmy wins. Besides The White Lotus<\/a>, which only took home one of its 23 nominations, The Bear was 0-for-13 and Black Mirror was 0-for-10. Whether the apparent hunger for new shows results in a different crop of nominees at the 2026 Emmys remains to be seen \u2014 between Alien: Earth, The Lowdown and Pluribus there will certainly be plenty of fresh series to choose from.
