Legendary actor and entertainer Dick Van Dyke is set to turn 100 this December, and fans across the country will have the chance to celebrate the milestone with a new theatrical documentary chronicling his life and career.<\/p>\n

\u201cDick Van Dyke: 100th Celebration\u201d will screen in select theaters Dec. 13\u201314 through Fathom Entertainment<\/a>, coinciding with the centennial of one of Hollywood\u2019s most enduring performers.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s wonderful; a total surprise for me,\u201d Van Dyke said in a statement filmmakers shared with The Associated Press<\/a>. \u201cIf you don\u2019t think luck has a lot to do with it, then you\u2019re mistaken.\u201d<\/p>\n

The documentary has been in production for over 30 years and includes never-before-heard stories from Van Dyke, who reflects on his eight-decade career in entertainment. The film features archival footage and classic clips from \u201cMary Poppins,\u201d \u201cChitty Chitty Bang Bang,\u201d \u201cBye Bye Birdie,\u201d \u201cThe Dick Van Dyke Show\u201d and \u201cDiagnosis: Murder,\u201d among others.<\/p>\n

Also included is a segment highlighting Van Dyke\u2019s return to his hometown of Danville, Illinois, where he revisits formative locations such as his childhood home, the radio station where he got his start at age 16, and his high school auditorium stage.<\/p>\n

Director Steve Boettcher, who began interviewing Van Dyke more than three decades ago, also spoke with many of Van Dyke\u2019s longtime collaborators \u2014 among them Mary Tyler Moore, Carl Reiner, Rose Marie, Morey Amsterdam, Betty White, Tim Conway and Chita Rivera \u2014 all of whom have since died.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re really excited about the film,\u201d Boettcher said. \u201cIt reflects the spirit of Dick Van Dyke \u2014 there\u2019s music, laughter, and heartfelt moments. It\u2019s pure entertainment.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tickets<\/a> for the two-day screening event go on sale Oct. 31.<\/p>\n

Van Dyke\u2019s career began on Broadway in 1959 with \u201cThe Girls Against the Boys,\u201d but he gained widespread acclaim for his Tony Award-winning role<\/a> in \u201cBye Bye Birdie.\u201d His success on stage led to his breakout television role in \u201cThe Dick Van Dyke Show,\u201d which earned him multiple Emmy Awards<\/a> and solidified his place in television history.<\/p>\n

In recent years, he has continued to make headlines with appearances at the Kennedy Center Honors, a surprise cameo in \u201cMary Poppins Returns\u201d (2018), and a performance on \u201cThe Masked Singer\u201d at age 97. <\/p>\n
