{"id":2026574,"date":"2025-09-16T16:12:05","date_gmt":"2025-09-16T16:12:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/?p=2026574"},"modified":"2025-09-16T16:12:05","modified_gmt":"2025-09-16T16:12:05","slug":"sing-out-loud-music-fest-shines-on-local-artists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/sing-out-loud-music-fest-shines-on-local-artists\/","title":{"rendered":"Sing Out Loud music fest shines on local artists"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"46dadad2-d91f-4bf6-aa61-fc951caef1cf\">This year\u2019s Sing Out Loud music festival in St. Augustine is headlined by popular artists like Hozier, beabadoobee, Father John Misty and Rilo Kiley, but local artists and venues are getting in on the action with free showcase events all over town.<\/p>\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"f2d44b5b-6082-47ad-b003-1cba40443088\">During September, St. Johns County Cultural Events Inc., the nonprofit organization that runs the St. Augustine Amphitheater, the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall and the Sing Out Loud festival, hosts more than 100 free shows along with its marquee main event. Those shows range from poetry and standup comedy to local hip-hop, indie rock and bluegrass.<\/p>\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"f75075a4-c6a1-4b84-9bc5-bdb35d1e5ea6\">Dianya Markovits, director of public relations, says the goal since the festival <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/jaxtoday.org\/2023\/09\/19\/going-to-st-augustines-sing-out-loud-fest-this-weekend\/\">began nine years ago<\/a> was to boost the local music scene by supporting St. Johns County\u2019s artists and venues.<\/p>\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"af53ad57-edd7-4e46-9e66-c63f336159e0\">\u201cSeptember really is a slow month for tourism in St. Johns County, and when you don\u2019t have tourists coming to St. Johns County, that also means restaurants and bars tend to cut costs. Having live music is some of those costs that would get cut,\u201d Markovits says.<\/p>\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"5114b41a-1597-460e-a028-b4633e39425d\">And not only do the organizers book acts from near and far to play at local venues, they foot the bill to ensure they\u2019re paid, too.<\/p>\n<h3 data-beyondwords-marker=\"1c27c9e9-ef61-4ec7-ac01-47b6be0126c4\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The vibrant music scene<\/h3>\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"e8619b39-88c9-4f5e-a6d9-c30480d328c1\">\u201cWe\u2019re firm believers in supporting local music, and part of that is supporting the artists that play.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"e3e5799b-4dce-4626-8e4d-c87f70f784fd\">Concert events across the area began Sept. 5, but they run through Sept. 28 with showcases featuring local and touring bands.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"aac8d50e-1de7-48c9-8287-919585ec2446\">One of those events will start at 6 p.m. Thursday at Spinster Abbott\u2019s Taproom &amp; Bodega on San Marco Avenue. The free concert features the Gainesville jazz funk group Dionysus, Miami singer-songwriter Quiana Major and local rock outfit Pocket Knife Dance Party.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"2b6cbf59-60ea-4957-863b-570701671a7c\">Eric Hasselman is the guitarist for Pocket Knife Dance Party. He played a showcase event for Sing Out Loud a few years ago with another band, but the 21-year-old is excited to play this year\u2019s event with two of his best friends.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"3e70ddc2-c7e5-4eca-acae-b03412dd4898\">St. Augustine\u2019s local music scene is vibrant, Hasselman says, and that means there\u2019s shows all year round, but there\u2019s \u201can energy in St. Augustine in the month of September that is a noticeable difference,\u201d Hasselman says.<\/p>\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"65febb48-eb5e-42ce-ad0c-fd68e0b9d3d9\">\u201cObviously you have the Nights of Lights in the December and January time period,\u201d he says, \u201cand it\u2019s kind of that spark but for the music aspect of St. Augustine.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure data-beyondwords-marker=\"ec76d9cb-62cb-4b34-89e8-058177244585\" class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">St. Augustine rock band Pocket Knife Dance Party is composed of longtime friends. Shown from left are Eric Hasselman, Jarius Williams and Jordon Henley. | Pocket Knife Dance Party<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"fa52c41a-c23d-416f-862b-ede43805f52d\">Part of the appeal is the number of concerts happening at the same time, many of them scattered around St. Augustine\u2019s downtown core.<\/p>\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"c3b1d8aa-07b6-4f4c-bdd6-3dc2c381e0e2\">\u201cThe fact that they\u2019re all free is so welcoming, and the fact that they\u2019re all usually within like a 2-mile radius is also really nice,\u201d Hasselman says. \u201cTo be like, \u2018I want to see this opener at Spinster Abbott\u2019s, and then I want to see this headliner at Sarbez. Good thing all we have to do is go over the Bridge of Lions and it\u2019s right there.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"55b6732d-ddf0-4c60-8621-f53277b29605\">One of the venues participating in the local showcases is Shanghai Nobby\u2019s, a neighborhood bar that\u2019s been open for 40 years just over the Bridge of Lions on Anastasia Island.<\/p>\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"4d9aee33-20cb-46d2-b6bd-8749bc7b1faf\">Owner David Wernicke says Sing Out Loud\u2019s strategic placement in September has been a big boon.<\/p>\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"e1845bf7-9a43-4bff-b122-aafa635403ee\">And with The Amphitheater paying artists and eliminating the need for venues to charge a cover fee to come hear music, Wernicke says Sing Out Loud showcase events can make new regulars out of people who may have never heard of a particular spot.<\/p>\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"1a122a78-e479-420c-a001-62f15c4ef284\">\u201cThe fact that they\u2019re all free shows sponsored by The Amphitheater,\u201d he says, \u201cmore people will be coming in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"c9411154-a0c9-4e42-8076-b6d67d64aad1\">He says Sing Out Loud is a great opportunity for people who live in the area and tourists alike to come out, be a part of their community and see some great music.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"8fd7d200-0a12-4d12-aa53-4d69bfad673a\">\u201cKeep the dream alive,\u201d Wernicke says. \u201cIf you\u2019re a musician, participate.
