While he was passionate about filmmaking, Redford was also an activist for the climate. In 2005, he founded the Redford Center, a nonprofit dedicated to \u201cenvironmental impact filmmaking,\u201d per its website. Through its mission, the center states that its films have \u201c<\/span>halted the construction of harmful coal plants, restored the Colorado River Delta, reconnected people to nature, and helped accelerate the clean energy revolution.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2016, Redford was given the Presidential Medal of Freedom by then-president <\/span>Barack Obama<\/a> <\/strong>for his work in both the film and climate space.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAs an actor, director, producer, and as an advocate, he has not stopped,\u201d Obama said during the ceremony. \u201cWe admire Bob not just for his remarkable acting, but for having figured out what to do next.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Indeed, it wasn\u2019t until 2018 that Redford\u2014who shares four children with ex wife <\/span>Lola Van Wagenen<\/strong>\u2014decided to slow down and spend more time with his family.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI just figure that I\u2019ve had a long career that I\u2019m very pleased with,\u201d Redford told the Associated Press at the time. \u201cIt\u2019s been so long, ever since I was 21. I figure now as I\u2019m getting into my 80s, it\u2019s maybe time to move toward retirement and spend more time with my wife and family.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
