\u201cRobert Redford passed away on September 16, 2025, at his home at Sundance in the mountains of Utah \u2015 the place he loved, surrounded by those he loved,\u201d his publicist, Cindi Berger, said in a statement shared with celebrity.land. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cHe will be missed greatly,\u201d Berger said, adding that \u201cthe family requests privacy.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The \u201cButch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid\u201d actor was 89 at his time of his death. The New York Times<\/a> was the first to report the news. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Redford spoke about his desire to become an actor in a candid interview with Collider in 2019<\/a>, telling the publication that \u201cthe idea of being an actor was to have a sense of freedom.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cYou were free to be, to act as someone else, if you were paying attention to the people around you,\u201d he shared. \u201cYou had a chance to be an artist, because acting is an art form. You had a chance to say, \u2018I know this person, I\u2019ve seen this person before and I want to bring that forward.\u2019\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Tributes poured in from those who worked alongside Redford or simply admired his work from afar.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThank you Robert Redford, a tremendously influential cultural figure for the creative choices made as an actor\/producer\/director,\u201d director and actor Ron Howard said in a statement posted to his X account. He also thanked the late director \u201cfor launching the Sundance Film Festival, which supercharged America\u2019s Independent Film movement.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Ben Stiller kept his remembrance of Redford short and sweet, simply writing \u201cNo actor more iconic,\u201d alongside a photo of the director.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Hillary Clinton paid tribute to both Redford\u2019s work and the activism for which he was also known. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n
