NEW MEXICO<\/a> (KRQE) \u2013 The New Mexico film industry is mourning the loss of film icon Robert Redford, who died at 89 years old<\/a>. He had deep ties to the Land of Enchantment, both on and off screen, with those in the film industry remembering the actor\/director\u2019s legacy.<\/p>\n New Mexico governor remembers Robert Redford, highlights impact on state\u2019s film industry <\/a><\/p>\n An Oscar-winning director, actor, producer, and environmental activist, Robert Redford is now being remembered for his legacy not only in filmmaking but also for his deep ties to New Mexico. Those ties go back to the late 1980s when he filmed \u201cThe Milagro Beanfield War,\u201d which was shot in Truchas. He was an advocate for elevating the lesser-known voices in cinema.<\/p>\n Redford also sparked the annual Albuquerque Film & Music Experience dedicated to showing independent creators on screen and stage. His impact was felt by many statewide. \u201cHe and his wife were both avid in the local Santa Fe art scene. He was a perfect gentleman. He had a really charming way about him,\u201d said Artistic Director for the Santa Fe International Film Festival Jacques Paisner.<\/p>\n Actor Jeremiah Bitsui worked with Redford over the years, most recently on the TV show \u201cDark Winds\u201d filmed in New Mexico. Bitsui said Redford paved the way for him and other storytellers. \u201cHe really had a heart for independent film, for the next visionaries that would come. Even now, you watch a lot of important film, his mark is there because he\u2019s helped curate those voices,\u201d said Bitsui.<\/p>\n Known for \u201cButch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,\u201d Redford was one of the biggest stars in the 1970s. Years later, he\u2019d start the Sundance Institute in the 1980s focused on independent film and inspiring the next generation who say they had the honor of meeting him.<\/p>\n The New Mexico film office sent KRQE the following statement:<\/p>\n We are deeply saddened by the passing of Robert Redford, a true icon whose legacy is inextricably linked to New Mexico.
