The\u00a0<\/b>NME<\/i><\/b>\u00a0Big Read \u2013 Elton John: \u201cI\u2019m not interested in the past \u2013 not even Elton John\u2019s past\u201d\u00a0<\/b><\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\nJohn explained outlined the process in the new short film, which is out now, with the help of jewellery designer Theo Fennell.<\/p>\n
After his double knee replacement last year, he met with Fennell, and said in the film: \u201cWhen I had my kneecaps removed, the left one first and then the right, I asked my surgeon if I could keep the kneecaps, which she was rather startled about.\u201d<\/p>\n
Fennell added: \u201cWe had to bake them to dry them out. Then they get raw like pumice stone, they\u2019re very porous, and so we had to paint them with acetate and then just polish them up.\u201d<\/p>\n
As Fennell held up the resulting necklace, John revealed that his surgeon said he had the \u201cworst knees\u201d he\u2019d ever operated on, continuing: \u201cThat hole was actually in my kneecap. It looks a bit like an old artefact from Egypt.\u201d<\/p>\n
He added that Fennell \u201cbrilliantly had the necklace chain made out of bones\u201d and included an inscription that translates to \u201cI will no longer bow to any man,\u201d in Latin. \u201cWhich of course you can\u2019t do with a kneecap missing,\u201d Fennell explained.
