Elton John<\/span><\/a> had his kneecaps turned into gold-plated jewelry after they were removed. Yes, the actual bones from his body. The famed musician shared this rather baffling anecdote in a short new documentary called \u201c<\/span>Elton John \u2013 Touched By Gold<\/span><\/a>,\u201d which was created by the World Gold Council because, in the organization\u2019s words, John\u2019s life \u201chas been touched by gold in fascinating ways, both on and off the stage.\u201d Fascinating is certainly right; who else wears their right patella as a necklace?<\/span><\/p>\n The good stuff starts around the 11-minute mark, if you want to see the kneecap jewelry for yourself. \u201cWhen I had my kneecaps removed, the left one first and then the right, I asked my surgeon if I could keep the kneecaps, which he was rather startled about,\u201d John tells London jewelry designer Theo Fennell in the video. \u201cThen I rang you and said, \u2018Would you be prepared to, if I gave you the left and the right kneecap, to do what you want with them?’\u201d Fennell was on board. \u201cWe baked them. We had to bake them to dry them out,\u201d the designer recalled. \u201cThen they get rather like pumice stone, they\u2019re very porous. So we had to paint them with acetate and then just polish them up.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Fennell was able to turn some of the problems with John\u2019s knees (his surgeon apparently said they were \u201cthe worst knees he\u2019s ever operated on\u201d) into a solution. There was a natural hole in the singer\u2019s right kneecap that now has a necklace chain\u2014styled to look like bones, no less\u2014running through it. \u201cIt looks a bit like an old artifact from Egypt or something,\u201d John mused while admiring the piece. Fennell agreed that the necklace was \u201ctalismanic.\u201d \u201cI love doing things that, in a thousand years, this will be, as it says here, this will be Elton John\u2019s kneecap,\u201d he continued. \u201cHow many people will believe that? I don\u2019t know.\u201d The jewelry designer also got a good joke in while simultaneously revealing that the charm features the phrase \u201cI will no longer bow to any man\u201d in Latin. \u201cWhich, of course, you can\u2019t do with a kneecap missing,\u201d he quipped.<\/span><\/p>\n Fennell turned John\u2019s left kneecap into a brooch because there was apparently less bone to work with. \u201cI honestly think these are timeless pieces that will last for centuries,\u201d John said.
