In theaters Sept. 26.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Unrelenting drive powers director Paul Thomas Anderson\u2019s sprawling, violent, sweaty, vulgar and invigorating new movie \u201cOne Battle After Another.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Its adrenaline-junkie characters, like Leonardo DiCaprio\u2019s paranoid Bob, keep charging ahead as restless images both beautiful and hellish never pause to take in the western scenery.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Even its title reeks of burning rubber on asphalt.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That non-stop, speed-demon forward motion could be why, at nearly three hours, the ambitious film never gets bogged down by its daunting length. \u201cBattle\u201d is simultaneously a marathon<em> and <\/em>a sprint. At the end I wasn\u2019t tired \u2014 I was out of breath.<\/p>\n<p>Gripping stuff, not to mention ginormous. But <em>c\u2019est la vie<\/em>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Leonardo DiCaprio plays a dad on a mission in \u201cOne Battle After Another.\u201d <span class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The sharp mind behind \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2007\/12\/26\/oil-star-performance\/\">There Will Be Blood<\/a>\u201d and \u201cBoogie Nights\u201d has also never shied away from controversy (<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2021\/11\/25\/licorice-pizza-review-the-best-movie-of-the-year\/\">cough, \u201cLicorice Pizza,\u201d couch<\/a>). And aspects of his explosive action-drama-comedy hybrid will surely rile up some people.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Take Bob (DiCaprio). Nicknamed Rocket Man, he\u2019s a vigilante justice warrior who empties out immigration detention centers on the US-Mexico border and bombs banks and courthouses alongside his gun-totin\u2019 revolutionaries who call themselves the French 75.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a declaration of war!,\u201d they yell. \u201cWe\u2019re here to right your wrongs, motherf\u2013ker!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They are essentially domestic terrorists.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019d I tell you?<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Paul Thomas Anderson\u2019s film tells the story of a vigilante justice group called the French 75. <span class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While the band of rebels are wacky and swear so much they\u2019d make David Mamet blush, the movie treats them with moral complexity.\u00a0It is not preachy whatsoever.<\/p>\n<p>When Bob\u2019s girlfriend and mother of his kid, who goes by the call sign Perfidia Beverly Hills (Teyana Taylor), is caught by cops, she rats on her pals, and Bob and his daughter Willa (Chase Infiniti, a real talent) are forced into hiding with new identities for 16 years.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Welcome to \u201cLeo Miserables.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Sean Penn is wild as Col. Steven J. Lockjaw. <span class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After the jump, \u201cBattle\u201d goes from a bombs-away, political heist movie into a juicy, snarling revenge thriller. Smoothly, too. Bob and Willa are pursued, Javert-style, by a boot-camp-officer-ish military man who, back in the old days, became obsessed with Perfidia and forced her to have sex with him.<\/p>\n<p>That memorable freak\u2019s hilarious name is like something out of Charles Dickens \u2014 Col. Steven J. Lockjaw. And a feral Sean Penn, appearing to be 90% leather, gives the creepy colonel an absolutely nutso, frightening performance. What exactly fuels Lockjaw\u2019s laser-focused mission is an entertaining question to untangle throughout.<\/p>\n<p>In the intervening years, Lockjaw\u2019s nemesis, Bob, has devolved into a goateed survivalist who lives in the woods and doesn\u2019t let his teenager own a phone.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Bob is helped by Sergio (Benicio del Toro). <span class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Dirty, dingy DiCaprio twitches and his eyes dart around like a rodent, prepared for the inevitable day the tiny family is found out. Chaotic, untrusting Bob is a throwback to DiCaprio\u2019s Howard Hughes in \u201cThe Aviator\u201d \u2014 the Hughes of the second half anyway \u2014 only without the billions and with lots of pot and guns.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The determined dad is helped out by Sergio (Benicio del Toro), a local dojo\u2019s chilled-out sensei with a secret. Anderson loves giving his people weird professions, and del Toro\u2019s \u201cit\u2019ll all be fine!\u201d sense of humor lightens the heavy load.<\/p>\n<p>Fleeing to safety, Willa gets a lifeline from Deandra (Regina King), an on-the-lamb French 75 member she can trust.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>DiCaprio channels his performance as Howard Hughes in \u201cThe Aviator.\u201d <span class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I wasn\u2019t totally sold on a sinister-yet-funny side plot that concerns a hidden society of racists Lockjaw wants to be a member of called the Christmas Adventurers Society.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Their \u201cSNL\u201d-level greeting, \u201cHail, Saint Nick!,\u201d gets a hearty laugh. And the ugly group is essential to the movie\u2019s wrap-up. But it\u2019s also one of \u201cBattle\u201d\u2019s looser and less-thoughtful threads. <\/p>\n<p>We don\u2019t learn enough about them.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Chase Infiniti plays Willa. <span class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>When the film reaches its volcanic grand finale, Anderson throws in a brilliant chase scene through the desert that is bound to become a cinema classic.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The two cars dizzingly speed up and down rolling dunes, disappearing behind them and reappearing on top. Where is he? Where is she?
