\t\t\t1<\/i><\/p>\n Gladys Knight, Chaka Khan, Patti LaBelle and Stephanie Mills are joining forces for a tour that will come to Newark and Atlantic City.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Here is a roundup of major arts events taking place around New Jersey, through Sept. 25.<\/p>\n MUSIC<\/strong><\/p>\n \u2022 <\/strong>The \u201cThe Queens! 4 Legends. 1 Stage\u201d<\/strong> tour \u2014 featuring separate sets by Gladys Knight, Patti LaBelle, Chaka Khan and Stephanie Mills \u2014 will come to The Prudential Center<\/a> in Newark, Sept. 25 at 8 p.m., and Boardwalk Hall<\/a> in Atlantic City, Oct. 4 at 8 p.m.<\/p>\n \u201cWe will come together in support of one another and in harmony at a time when love is most needed,\u201d said Knight, in a press release.<\/p>\n \u201cOur different styles unite in love, compassion and understanding and it\u2019s important to come together now,\u201d said Mills.<\/p>\n ELVIS COSTELLO<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u2022 Elvis Costello<\/strong> will bring his \u201cRadio Soul! The Early Songs of Elvis Costello\u201d tour to The Event Center at Borgata Hotel Casino and Spa<\/a> in Atlantic City, Sept. 19 at 8 pm. He will be joined by his band The Imposters (keyboardist Steve Nieve, drummer Pete Thomas, bassist Davey Faragher) as well as guitarist Charlie Sexton. Nieve and Thomas were also members of Costello\u2019s original band, The Attractions.<\/p>\n The tour is emphasizing songs from Costello\u2019s first decade as a recording artist (i.e., the songs he recorded from his 1977 debut My Aim Is True<\/em> to 1986\u2019s Blood & Chocolate<\/em>).<\/p>\n Costello said in a press release: \u201cFor any songwriter, it has to be a compliment if people want to hear songs written up to fifty years ago. \u2026 You can expect the unexpected and the faithful in equal measure. Don\u2019t forget this show is \u2018Performed by Elvis Costello & The Imposters,\u2019 an ensemble which includes three people who first recorded this music and two more who bring something entirely new. All shows are at 8 p.m.<\/p>\n ROSANNE CASH<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u2022 <\/strong>Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame member Rosanne Cash <\/strong>will perform with John Leventhal at The Outpost in the Burbs<\/a> at The First Congregational Church in Montclair, Sept. 19 at 8 p.m. Leventhal, Cash\u2019s husband, has worked with her as a co-songwriter, co-producer and multi-instrumentalist since 1993. The two recently formed their own record label, RumbleStrip Records, whose releases include a expanded and remastered edition of Cash\u2019s 1993 album The Wheel<\/em>, and an anthology, The Essential Collection.<\/em><\/p>\n \u2022 Cimafunk<\/strong> \u2014 the Cuba-born, New Orleans-based singer-songwriter whose album El Alimento<\/em> was nominated in the Best Latin Rock or Alternative Album category of the Grammys in 2023 \u2014 will perform at The South Orange Performing Arts Center<\/a>, Sept. 19 at 7:30 p.m.<\/p>\n \u2022 The Tak\u00e1cs Quartet<\/strong> (violinists Edward Dusinberre and Harumi Rhodes, violist Richard O\u2019Neill and cellist Andr\u00e1s Fej\u00e9r) will be joined by violist Jordan Bak to play Mozart\u2019s Viola Quintet No. 3 in C Major, K. 515, and Viola Quintet No. 4 in G, Sept. 25 at 6 and 9 p.m. at Richardson Hall at Princeton University, as part of the Princeton University Concerts<\/a> series.<\/p>\n \u2022 <\/strong>With baseball\u2019s pennant race in full swing, it is a good time to see The Baseball Project<\/strong> on tour; the band will perform its songs about baseball history and lore (such as \u201cTed Fucking Williams,\u201d \u201cHarvey Haddix,\u201d \u201cOh Oh Ohtani!\u201d and \u201cMonument Park\u201d) at White Eagle Hall<\/a> in Jersey City, Sept. 21 at 8 p.m.<\/p>\n Band members include Peter Buck and Mike Mills (both of R.E.M.), Steve Wynn (of The Dream Syndicate), Scott McCaughey (of Young Fresh Fellows) and Linda Pitmon. The Minus 5, led by McCaughey and also featuring Buck and Pitmon, will open.<\/p>\n SWINGADELIC<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u2022 Swingadelic<\/strong>, joined by singer Vanessa Perea, will pay tribute to \u201cThe Three Louies\u201d (Armstrong, Jordan and Prima) at a show of that name at The Grunin Center for the Arts<\/a> at Ocean County College, Toms River, Sept. 21 at 3 p.m.<\/p>\n \u2022 <\/strong>The Princeton Folk Music Society<\/a> will present The Ebony Hillbillies<\/strong> at Christ Congregation Church in Princeton, Sept. 19 at 8 p.m., with live streaming also available on YouTube<\/a>. The New York-based group plays a mixture of pop, country, bluegrass, folk and jazz, and has been described as \u201cthe last African-American String Band in America.\u201d<\/p>\n \u2022 Fairies Wear Boots<\/strong>, a new band fronted by singer Emily Grove and featuring members of Jersey bands such as The Battery Electric and Mothguts, will perform the music of the late Ozzy Osbourne and his band Black Sabbath at The Stone Pony<\/a> in Asbury Park, Sept. 19 at 7:15 p.m.<\/p>\n The other acts on the bill \u2014 SPYNE!, Kobi Reese and Last Legs \u2014 will include some Osbourne songs in their sets, as well.<\/p>\n FESTIVALS<\/strong><\/p>\n \u2022<\/strong> Co-headliners for the 32nd annual XPoNential Music Festival<\/a><\/strong> \u2014 taking place at Wiggins Park in Camden, Sept. 19-21 \u2014 will be War (best known for \u201970s hits such as \u201cLow Rider,\u201d \u201cThe Cisco Kid\u201d and \u201cWhy Can\u2019t We Be Friends?\u201d), Sept. 19; Sharon Van Etten & the Attachment Theory, Sept. 20; and Courtney Barnett, Sept. 21. Other performers will include Molly Tuttle, Richard Thompson, The Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Kathleen Edwards, Greensky Bluegrass, Craig Finn and Daniel Donato\u2019s Cosmic Country.<\/p>\n The music will take place on two stages, with a children\u2019s activities area offered as well. Food, beverages and other items will be available from vendors.\u00a0The festival is presented by Philadelphia radio station WXPN.<\/p>\n JAY SEAN<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u2022 <\/strong>The Indian-British singer-songwriter Jay Sean<\/strong> will give a concert at Carteret Park, Sept. 20 at 8 p.m. (with V\u00e9yah opening) as part of the city\u2019s 29th annual Ethnic Day.<\/p>\n Ethnic Day is part of the Sept. 17-21 Carteret Music Festival & Annual Charity Carnival<\/a>, which will also include a Freestyle Night, Sept. 19 at 7:45 p.m., with Brenda K. Other attractions will include German beer and food; traditional German music and dance; steinholding, bratwurst-eating, cornhole and trivia contests; miniature golf; a video-game truck, and more.<\/p>\n \u2022 The Middlesex County Jazz Fest <\/a><\/strong>will begin with a performance by Elizabeth Bougerol (of the group The Hot Sardines), Brass Queens and The Woodbridge High School Jazz Choir, Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. at Parker Press Park in Woodbridge.<\/p>\n The show will be free, as will the festival\u2019s other events, taking place later in the month in Carteret, Metuchen and New Brunswick.<\/p>\n DANCE<\/strong><\/p>\n \u2022<\/strong> The Moving Architects<\/a> will present \u201cWhere She Once Stood\u201d <\/strong>at Crane House & Historic YWCA in Montclair, Sept. 20, with performances at various times from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The site-specific show features an all-female cast; according to a press release, \u201caudiences are guided through the house and grounds to witness stories from different eras of the home\u2019s history \u2014 including three generations of the Crane family and the enslaved people and servants who were part of the household (1796\u20131900), to the period when the home was a segregated YWCA for Black women and girls, including boarders (1920\u20131965). \u2026 This project honors the women of the Crane House & Historic YWCA by giving physical form to their experiences and centering women\u2019s voices in the spaces where they once stood.\u201d<\/p>\n VALERIE TERRANOVA<\/p>\n Matt Monaco will co-star in \u201cRIFT, or white lies,\u201d at Luna Stage in West Orange.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n THEATER<\/strong><\/p>\n \u2022<\/strong> Luna Stage<\/a> in West Orange \u2014 which commissioned Gabriel Jason Dean\u2019s tense two-character drama \u201cRIFT, or white lies,\u201d <\/strong>premiered it last year (read review HERE<\/a>) and presented it in Edinburgh, this summer \u2014 will present it again in West Orange for two nights only, July 19-20 at 8 p.m., with the same actors (Matt Monaco and Blake Stadnik) and director (Luna Stage artistic director Ari Laura Kreith).<\/p>\n \u2022<\/strong> The Improvised Shakespeare Company <\/strong>will perform at The South Orange Performing Arts Center<\/a>, Sept. 21 at 7:30 p.m. According to the SOPAC website, the troupe offers \u201cspontaneous comedy with the language and themes of the Bard\u201d and \u201ccreates a brand-new, fully improvised Shakespearean play every night, based on one audience suggestion.\u201d<\/p>\n FILM<\/strong><\/p>\n \u2022 <\/strong>Ryan Reynolds \u2014 who co-produced \u201cJohn Candy: I Like Me,\u201d<\/strong> a new documentary about actor and comedian John Candy \u2014 will appear at a screening of it at The State Theatre<\/a> in New Brunswick, Sept. 25 at 7 p.m. According to the State Theatre website, the event, which is titled \u201cAn Evening With Ryan Reynolds & Friends\u201d and is part of a North American tour, will feature Reynolds in a question-and-answer session \u201calong with family and friends of John Candy.\u201d\u00a0Proceeds will benefit the \u201cFinding Cures. Saving Children\u201d program at St. Jude\u2019s Children\u2019s Research Hospital.<\/p>\n Candy \u2014 best known for films such as \u201cStripes,\u201d \u201cSplash,\u201d \u201cPlanes, Trains and Automobiles\u201d and \u201cUncle Buck\u201d \u2014 died in 1994, at the age of 43.
