It is impossible to imagine Malcolm in the Middle without Panettiere\u2019s Jessica. It seems that the actress also cannot imagine her life without the role. In a recent interview, she revealed how she still fondly looks back at the iconic character and how she still credits Bryan Cranston for helping her get the role.<\/p>\n
Hayden Panettiere was barely 14 when she started her Malcolm in the Middle<\/a> journey. Despite being so young, she boasted quite an impressive resume. She had seven film appearances and a couple of daily soap ones. Though she was not really underqualified for the role, she still believes Bryan Cranston\u2019s directing played a huge part in her getting picked for the role.<\/p>\n Recalling the time, Panettiere told EW<\/a>, \u201cThey had back-combed my hair like crazy the first time I was on there. To get it brushed out at the end of the day was a nightmare,\u201d she added, \u201cI loved being able to play a character that was so different from the way I knew people saw me.\u201d<\/p>\n Going over the audition process, Panettiere recalled, \u201cI remember the whole audition process. I only got the role because Bryan Cranston<\/a> was directing. That is my true belief, because he was an actor. He looked at me and said, \u2018You\u2019re so wrong for this. But we\u2019re going to make it work.\u2019 That was the first time I had ever experienced someone really taking a chance on me.\u201d<\/p>\n Panettiere ended up playing Jessica, the babysitter, who is still regarded as a key part of the show. She made her debut in season 4. In this same interview with EW, Panettiere further shared a touching story about meeting Cranston.<\/p>\n \u201cMy mom also played his wife in Loving, the soap opera Loving, way back when,\u201d she explained. Explaining what happened, when Cranston finally met Panettiere\u2019s mother, she added, \u201cAnd he saw my mom, and my mom just said, \u2018Hi, Bryan.\u2019 It took him a second, but just to see his face go from, \u2018Who are you? How do I know you?\u2019 to \u2018Oh my God,\u2019 it was really special.\u201d<\/p>\n Panettiere went on to deliver one of her most offbeat and successful characters in the show.
