IndyStar motorsports reporter Nathan Brown on the news<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/media-video><\/div>\n<p><story-highlights class=\"spacer-small column ten-column no-gutter\" util-module-path=\"elements\/story\"><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We&#8217;ve heard this before: IndyCar and Penske Entertainment are committed to making a race in Mexico City work.<\/li>\n<li>But it won&#8217;t be in 2026 as the IndyCar schedule was released Tuesday. Penske Entertainment president and CEO Mark Miles explained why.<\/li>\n<li>Race dates, a crowded client market and the FIFA World Cup were among issues that popped up during negotiations, Miles said.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/story-highlights><partner-banner util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" class=\"spacer-large\" min-height=\"390\" fluid=\"\" outstream=\"\"\/>\n<p>Penske Entertainment president and CEO <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.indystar.com\/search\/?q=mark+miles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mark Miles<\/a> was steadfast in his assertion that it was the complications of next summer\u2019s men&#8217;s FIFA World Cup \u2014 and that alone \u2014 that prevented <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.indycar.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">IndyCar<\/a> from racing at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, the permanent road course in Mexico City that <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.indystar.com\/story\/sports\/motor\/2025\/07\/20\/indycar-2026-schedule-mexico-city-pato-oward-iowa-speedway-nascar-doubleheader-discussions\/85281002007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">has been a target of the series<\/a> for a decade or more.<\/p>\n<partner-banner util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" class=\"spacer-large\" min-height=\"600\" fluid=\"\" outstream=\"\" momentum=\"\"\/>\n<p>American open-wheel racing last ran at the venue, which will continue to host annual stops for <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.formula1.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Formula 1<\/a> and Formula E and that in 2025 hosted the NASCAR Cup and Xfinity series, back in 2007 as Champ Car\u2019s season finale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe worked hard at it, and we really regret that we aren\u2019t there in 2026,\u201d Miles, the longtime series executive who has been behind <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.indystar.com\/sports\/motor-sports\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">IndyCar<\/a>\u2019s push over the past decade to get back to Mexico. \u201cWe were quite close on getting it done (for 2026). The World Cup and its effect on the economy and the business environment there for the summer next year really caused us to be more cautious.<\/p>\n<partner-inline util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" class=\"spacer-large\" placement=\"native-article_link\" sizes=\"[[300, 250], [3, 3]]\" min-height=\"250\" fluid=\"\" outstream=\"\"\/>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re going to stay on it. I\u2019ll be in Mexico in the next month, and we\u2019ll be dealing with the folks at OCESA and CIE (the track promoters) to look for the opportunity. We want to be back there as soon as we can.&#8221;<\/p>\n<partner-banner util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" fluid=\"\" bottom=\"\" lazy=\"\" class=\"spacer-large\" min-height=\"390\" outstream=\"\"\/>\n<p>As Miles hinted at multiple times Tuesday, Penske Entertainment has not yet decided the way in which it will continue to pursue a future race in Mexico City \u2014 meaning either with or without a promoter on the ground serving as a middleman between Penske Entertainment and the track operators of Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. For more than a year, Penske Entertainment has leaned on Ricardo Escotto, the Mexican businessman whose billboard business is one of the largest in the country, positioning Escotto as the race promoter for an IndyCar race that might&#8217;ve taken place next year \u2014 meaning he had been charged with renting the track, securing sponsorship and selling tickets, among other responsibilities. Moving forward, Penske Entertainment will first regroup with OCESA and CIE and then ultimately explore the dynamic that best suits everyone&#8217;s interests \u2014 whether that might mean keeping Escotto as the promoter, or either Penske Entertainment or the track group itself serving in that role in the way in which it has for NASCAR and F1.<\/p>\n<p><media-gallery-promo asset-id=\"83788817007\" class=\"column ten-column no-gutter spacer-large\"\/><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"presto-h2 wp-block-heading\">Why the FIFA World Cup kept IndyCar from Mexico City in 2026<\/h2>\n<p>Returning to Mexico City has long been a target of Miles, with quotes of his resurfacing recently from September 2015 when Miles, then the Hulman &amp; Co. CEO, stated that the city and track were \u201cstill looking good\u201d to host a 2016 IndyCar race \u2014 plans which never came to fruition.<\/p>\n<partner-inline util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" placement=\"native-article_link\" sizes=\"[[300, 250], [3, 3]]\" min-height=\"250\" fluid=\"\" outstream=\"\"\/><cta-atoms-container-inline util-module-path=\"elements\/cta\" class=\"spacer-large\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Though he said he\u2019s continued to have annual dialogue with the track\u2019s promoters and operators since then, the topic became a battleground just over a year ago, as NASCAR announced it had jumped IndyCar in the virtual line to land a race at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez and would race via a track-promoted race weekend in 2025. At the time, numerous IndyCar drivers were emphatic in their belief that Penske Entertainment\u2019s lack of urgency in landing a race there at a time when the popularity of Mexican driver <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.indystar.com\/search\/?q=pato+o%27ward\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pato O\u2019Ward<\/a> had skyrocketed in recent years was sorely underwhelming.<\/p>\n<p>Miles responded that he continued to be told by those on the ground there that the brands of IndyCar and O\u2019Ward were not yet large enough for the track to be willing to stick its neck out there and put on the race itself. Because of that, Penske Entertainment had named Escotto its representative in the area to pursue a date for a race as soon as 2026.<\/p>\n<partner-banner util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" fluid=\"\" bottom=\"\" lazy=\"\" class=\"spacer-large\" min-height=\"600\" outstream=\"\" momentum=\"\"\/>\n<p class=\"related-link\"><span class=\"exclude-from-newsgate\"><strong style=\"margin-right:3px\">&#8216;Hand him over to the world&#8217;: <\/strong><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.indystar.com\/story\/sports\/motor\/indy-500\/2025\/05\/23\/pato-oward-indycar-star-pato-shop-billboards-merch-autographs-commercials-duck\/82642354007\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">How Pato O&#8217;Ward became IndyCar&#8217;s biggest star<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>And at that point in August 2024, IndyCar had pursued April 12, 2026, to hold such a race. As Miles said Tuesday, that was the plan until a couple months ago.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe thought (that date) was feasible, and then we signed an agreement with a prospective promoter (Escotto), but then we learned at the beginning of June that the date was no longer available,\u201d said Miles of the date that IndyStar previously reported could have helped support a NASCAR-IndyCar crossover weekend in Mexico City \u2014 an idea that Penske Entertainment is said to have swatted down.<\/p>\n<partner-inline util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" class=\"spacer-large\" placement=\"native-article_link\" sizes=\"[[300, 250], [3, 3]]\" min-height=\"250\" fluid=\"\" outstream=\"\"\/>\n<p>Miles went on to confirm IndyStar\u2019s previous reporting that July 26 \u2014 one week after the end of the World Cup festivities that will be split across 16 sites in North America, including Mexico City \u2014 was the revamped target race date, but effects from the World Cup lingered in Penske Entertainment officials\u2019 eyes that made landing a race a difficult endeavor to greenlight.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not that there\u2019s a head-to-head scheduling conflict, but if you\u2019re trying to cut through a large city like Mexico City and make sure the fans there know we\u2019re coming, the World Cup makes that difficult from a communication point of view,\u201d Miles said. \u201cCommercially, huge amounts of money were invested (locally in the World Cup) by the kinds of companies that we want to buy suites and sponsorships and to be commercially engaged in our race, and therefore it made it difficult to know that we\u2019d have the kind of support that we otherwise would have.\u201d<\/p>\n<partner-banner util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" fluid=\"\" bottom=\"\" lazy=\"\" class=\"spacer-large\" min-height=\"390\" outstream=\"\"\/>\n<p>Ultimately, Miles said, the decision was made by Penske Entertainment officials ahead of this year\u2019s season finale weekend at Nashville Superspeedway (Aug. 30-31) to put those Mexico City plans on hold and refocus with an eye for 2027, calling that \u201cthe prudent thing to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe care about being in Mexico City, and everyone we\u2019ve dealt with there believes we\u2019ll have a phenomenal event when we get there, but we want to do it right,\u201d Miles said.<\/p>\n<p>That reasoning doesn\u2019t quite explain the mindset shift \u2014 or at minimum the uber-positive public messaging he and others across Penske Entertainment spoke of a prospective 2026 Mexico City IndyCar race weekend with as recently as a month ago.<\/p>\n<partner-inline util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" class=\"spacer-large\" placement=\"native-article_link\" sizes=\"[[300, 250], [3, 3]]\" min-height=\"250\" fluid=\"\" outstream=\"\"\/>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re very confident we\u2019ll race in Mexico City in 2026,\u201d a Penske Entertainment executive told IndyStar on Aug. 13, 18 months after the World Cup schedule had been announced.<\/p>\n<partner-banner util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" fluid=\"\" bottom=\"\" lazy=\"\" class=\"spacer-large\" min-height=\"390\" outstream=\"\"\/>\n<p class=\"related-link\"><span class=\"exclude-from-newsgate\"><strong style=\"margin-right:3px\">Insider: <\/strong><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.indystar.com\/story\/sports\/motor\/2025\/09\/16\/2026-indycar-schedule-news-analysis-season-finale-phoenix-disappointments-mexico-nashville-laguna\/86176621007\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">5 takeaways of 2026 IndyCar schedule: Season finale dud, disappointments, more<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"presto-h2 wp-block-heading\">Mark Miles denies idea Liberty Media kept IndyCar from Mexico City<\/h2>\n<p>IndyStar had previously reported that <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.indystar.com\/story\/sports\/motor\/2025\/08\/14\/indycar-mexico-city-race-2026-schedule-financials-track-ownership\/85650123007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the track promotion group had significantly ratcheted up the asking price for a track rental<\/a> from Escotto\u2019s promoter group in recent negotiations, more than doubling that fee, according to a series source with direct knowledge of the negotiations, while also asking for more than 10% of ticketing revenue. As of IndyCar\u2019s Toronto race weekend in July, Penske Entertainment officials privately told paddock members they were <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.indystar.com\/story\/sports\/motor\/2025\/07\/20\/indycar-2026-schedule-mexico-city-pato-oward-iowa-speedway-nascar-doubleheader-discussions\/85281002007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">eyeing announcing their plans to race in Mexico City<\/a> in just over a week, sometime around or immediately after the Laguna Seca race weekend.<\/p>\n<p>At that same time, too, Live Nation, the major player in the entertainment business, took an additional 24% ownership stake in the promotional group that ultimately negotiates deals for the track, taking it from 51% to 75%.
