Judas Priest is working on a cover of Black Sabbath\u2019s \u201cWar Pigs\u201d<\/a> that will feature vocals from Ozzy Osbourne, who died in July<\/a>.<\/p>\n Lead singer Rob Halford detailed the process of recording the duet during a recent episode of the \u201cFull Metal Jackie\u201d<\/a> podcast.<\/p>\n \u201cOzzy\u2019s singing a line and then I\u2019m singing a line, and Ozzy\u2019s singing a line and I\u2019m singing a line,\u201d Halford said. \u201cIt\u2019s the first ever time in my entire life that I\u2019ve been able to do a duet with Ozzy and I\u2019m so eternally grateful and blessed that I was able to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n Judas Priest has covered the song live throughout the band\u2019s career. Their rendition caught the attention of Osbourne\u2019s wife and manager, Sharon, who came up with the idea of the collaboration.<\/p>\n \u201cShe approached me with this idea, she said, \u2018I love your version of War Pigs. Is there a way we can get Ozzy?\u2019\u201d Halford recalled on the podcast. \u201cI was [like], \u2018You\u2019re asking me? This is gonna happen!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n While Halford did not have an official release date for the \u201cWar Pigs\u201d cover, he did say it should drop in the near future.<\/p>\n \u201cThe green button\u2019s almost ready to go,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s gonna be pretty soon.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWhen you hear it, it\u2019s just colossal,\u201d Halford added. \u201cYou think that you\u2019ve heard the one experience of Priest\u2019s \u2018War Pigs,\u2019 but when you hear Priest\u2019s \u2018War Pigs\u2019 with Ozzy singing on that track, it\u2019s just going to a really special place.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWar Pigs\u201d is an anti-war protest song that is the opening track of Black Sabbath\u2019s 1970 album, \u201cParanoid.\u201d Originally written as an openly Satanic number called \u201cWalpurgis,\u201d the powerful anthem openly criticizes those in power who start wars for their own gain. The song was mostly inspired by conversations Geezer Butler had with returning Vietnam War veterans.<\/p>\n The song was written as \u2018Walpurgis,\u2019 which sounds a little like \u2018War Pigs.\u2019 But \u2018Walpurgis\u2019 is sort of like Christmas for Satanists. And to me, war was the big Satan,” Butler said in a 2010 interview with Noisecreep<\/a>. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t about politics or government or anything. It was evil. So I was saying \u2018generals gathered in the masses\/just like witches at black masses\u2019 to make an analogy. But when we brought it to the record company, they thought \u2018Walpurgis\u2019 sounded too Satanic. And that\u2019s when we turned it into \u2018War Pigs.\u2019 But we didn\u2019t change the lyrics, because they were already finished.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWar Pigs\u201d has been regarded as one of Black Sabbath\u2019s best songs. In 2020, Kerrang!<\/a> ranked \u201cWar Pigs\u201d fourth on its list of the 20 greatest Black Sabbath songs while Louder Sound<\/a> put it at No. 1 on its 2021 list of the 40 greatest Black Sabbath songs.<\/p>\n The song peaked<\/a> at No. 15 on Billboard\u2019s Hot Rock & Alternative Song\u2019s chart and has been certified gold<\/a> in the United Kingdom.
