In \u201cA Big Bold Beautiful Journey\u201d<\/a> (in theaters Sept. 19), Margot Robbie<\/a> plays a woman named Sarah as she falls in love with a handsome loner, David (Colin Farrell), and wrestles with the death of her mom (Lily Rabe). During one emotional exchange, Sarah recalls how her mom used to make mashed potatoes and watch the Tom Hanks comedy \u201cBig\u201d with her whenever Sarah was feeling blue.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt’s funny, I always asked my mom to make mashed potatoes as well,\u201d Robbie says. \u201cIt was just in the script and I was like, \u2018Yep, that’s exactly what I did as a kid.\u2019 I was always like, \u2018Can we have mashed potatoes, please?\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n

Like her character, Robbie and her three siblings were raised by a single mom, Sarie Kessler, after her parents separated when she was 5. Kessler works as a physiotherapist and often accompanies her daughter to awards shows and movie premieres.<\/p>\n

The Australian actress has explored the relationships between mothers and daughters in films such as \u201cBarbie\u201d and \u201cI, Tonya.\u201d She remembers having similarly personal conversations with \u201cBig Bold Beautiful\u201d director Kogonada, whom she fondly refers to as K.<\/p>\n

\u201cI find my mom in every project, really, but definitely in this one because my character also has a single mom,\u201d Robbie says. \u201cI read the script and I remember saying to K, \u2018Sarah\u2019s mom should be really tired,\u2019 because that\u2019s the reality of being a single mom. You\u2019re exhausted.\u201d<\/p>\n

Growing up, \u201cI remember my mom always closing her eyes at traffic lights and just saying, \u2018Tell me when it goes green,\u2019\u201d Robbie recalls. \u201cIt was a fun game for us. We\u2019d all be sitting in the back and then we’d be like, \u2018It’s green!\u2019 And she’d wake up. But she was just so tired.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cA Big Bold Beautiful Journey\u201d marks Robbie\u2019s first film since she welcomed a child with her husband, Tom Ackerley, last October. The romantic drama uses magical realism to explore big ideas of grief and love, following David and Sarah as they revisit pivotal moments in each other\u2019s lives. Robbie, 35, was hooked the moment she read the characters\u2019 meet-cute.<\/p>\n

\u201cQuite early on the film, Sarah just says to David out of nowhere, \u2018Will you marry me?\u2019 \u201d Robbie says. \u201cI remember thinking, \u2018Yeah, I would do something like that: just ask someone I\u2019ve known for five minutes if they\u2019ll marry me.\u2019 And honest to God, if they said yes, I would have been like, \u2018It\u2019s meant to be. We\u2019ll get married.\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n
