Julianne Hough<\/strong> weighed in on judges Derek Hough<\/strong> and Bruno Tonioli<\/strong> giving lower scores than normal during the season 34 premiere of Dancing With the Stars<\/em>.<\/p>\n \u201cI think over the years, we\u2019ve done a lot of fusions of proper technical ballroom and Latin dances have fused into sort of these hybrid dances,\u201d Julianne, 37, explained while appearing on the Thursday, September 18, episode of the \u201cDancing With the Stars Official Podcast.\u201d<\/a> \u201cI really appreciated Bruno and Derek dropping the scores<\/a> a little bit because you want to be able to see people improve, and you want to be able to give them the right critique so they can learn and grow.\u201d<\/p>\n Julianne\u2019s added she feels it\u2019s important to go back to the fundamentals and explained that late judge Len Goodman always focused on seemingly minor details that could make a difference on the dance floor.<\/p>\n “He\u2019d really be talking about the fundamentals and I think there was a lot of hybrid dancing [on Tuesday], which by the way, I get because we\u2019re in this new generation of TikTok and playful fun and it\u2019s entertaining,\u201d she said of Len, who died at the age of 78 in 2023. \u201cBut that\u2019s why Dancing With the Stars<\/em><\/a>is so amazing because it is technical and it\u2019s a specific genre and it\u2019s hard to do.\u201d<\/p>\n While some fans were upset that the judges were so harsh on the contestants, Julianne insisted that Derek, 40, and Tonioli, 69, did the right thing<\/a> with their scores.<\/p>\n \u201cEspecially for a premiere night, a little kick up the butt,\u201d she said. \u201cLet\u2019s go.\u201d<\/p>\n Parade Daily\ud83c\udfac\u00a0<\/strong>SIGN UP for Parade\u2019s Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0\ud83c\udfac<\/strong><\/p>\n Not only did viewers notice the harsh scores during the Tuesday, September 16, episode, but Derek explained at the beginning of the episode that they would be tough. \u201cThe scoring tonight, just be mindful, it might be a little lower than you\u2019re expecting because there\u2019s a long way to go,\u201d he said. \u201cThis is a marathon.
