Jimmy Fallon<\/strong> opened The Tonight Show<\/em> Thursday with a defiant pledge to fearlessly mock President Donald Trump<\/strong> \u2013 only for his monologue to be hijacked by a syrupy voice-over praising the president, a pointed skit riffing on the suspension<\/a> of rival host Jimmy Kimmel<\/strong> and fears of censorship<\/a>.<\/p>\n Opening the show, Fallon cracked that he had woken up to \u201c100 messages from my dad saying, \u2018Sorry they cancelled your show.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n He followed with bewilderment: \u201cTo be honest with you all, I don\u2019t know what is going on. And no one does. But I do know Jimmy Kimmel, and he is a decent, funny, and loving guy, and I hope he comes back.\u201d<\/p>\n But Fallon quickly pivoted to the heart of his bit, the uneasy climate for satire in the Trump era.<\/p>\n \u201cA lot of people are worried that we won\u2019t keep saying what we want to say or that we\u2019ll be censored,\u201d he told the audience, before promising: \u201cBut I\u2019m going to cover the president\u2019s trip to the U.K. just like I normally would.\u201d<\/p>\n It was the set-up for a little theater. Each time Fallon launched into a jab at Trump, his voice was abruptly muted and replaced with a voice-over praising the president.<\/p>\n Fallon\u2019s mocking of Trump\u2019s appearance during his UK trip was silenced as the voice boomed over studio speakers, with the comedian pulling exaggerated facial expressions and continuing his tirade, apparently unaware. At one point, Jeffrey Epstein\u2019s<\/strong> name was dubbed out as the voice-over chimed \u201cGoldblum.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cTo sum it up, the president is \u2013\u201d the host continued, only for the voice to supercede: \u201cMaking America great again by restoring our national reputation, reinvigorating our economy, and rebuilding our military.
