Stephen Colbert<\/strong> dusted off his old right-wing alter-ego on Thursday to satirize the ouster of ABC late-night rival Jimmy Kimmel<\/strong>, appointing his conservative persona as an \u201combudsman\u201d who would keep The Late Show<\/em> free of liberal bias.<\/p>\n After an opening monologue that skewered Kimmel\u2019s suspension<\/a> more pointedly as \u201cblatant censorship\u201d Colbert later revived a long-retired segment from his past show The Colbert Report<\/em> to platform his mockery.<\/p>\n \u201cLadies and gentlemen, we live in unsettling times with rising autocracy targeting America\u2019s most vulnerable talk show hosts,\u201d the host quipped, before introducing his \u201cidentical cousin and the former host of The Colbert Report<\/em>, Stephen Colbert.\u201d<\/p>\n The character, with his trademark bombast, declared, \u201cHello nation. Daddy\u2019s home,\u201d before launching into a tirade<\/p>\n \u201cLadies and gentlemen, my friends, nation, I return to you tonight to rescue you from this free speech crisis. I\u2019m going to scream the answer loud and proud. No holds barred with tonight\u2019s triumphant word,\u201d he said. \u201cNation folk, America is facing perhaps its greatest crisis in 249 years. You see, people are saying things that hurt Donald Trump\u2019s<\/strong> feelings.\u201d<\/p>\n He continued: \u201cNow, you might think the Constitution coddlers out there argue that Americans are born with certain God-given rights like life and liberty and, of course, the pursuit of happiness. But what about the pursuit of Donald Trump\u2019s happiness?\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cAnd yes, it\u2019s true the words Donald Trump aren\u2019t in the Constitution,\u201d he added. \u201cBut ladies and gentlemen, ladies and gentlemen, I can say they are because I have freedom of speech.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cYou can have your rights just as long as you don\u2019t use them,\u201d he thundered, likening the First Amendment to a gym membership.<\/p>\n He concluded: \u201cGive up, America. Just give up and stop saying anything that might upset the president.
