Former Tonight Show<\/em><\/a> host Jay Leno<\/a> has opened up about Jimmy Kimmel<\/a> following his \u201cindefinite\u201d suspension from ABC.<\/a> despite the pair having a contentious history.<\/p>\n

Speaking to journalists at Chris Wallace<\/a>\u2019s Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony on Thursday (September 18), Leno was asked about ABC pulling Kimmel off the air after threats from Federal Communications Commission chairman Brendan Carr related to comments Kimmel made about the\u00a0Charlie Kirk\u00a0shooting<\/a> on Monday\u2019s (September 14) show.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m on Jimmy Kimmel\u2019s side on that one,\u201d Leno told reporters. \u201cI\u2019m a huge proponent of free speech. Please. I\u2019m on Jimmy Kimmel\u2019s side.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added, \u201cYou don\u2019t get canceled saying popular things. Usually, it\u2019s the truth that winds up getting canceled, so we\u2019ll see what happens.\u201d<\/p>\n

Leno said that \u201cJimmy will land on his feet,\u201d adding, \u201cHe\u2019s a talented guy. He\u2019s funny. And we\u2019ll see what happens.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a comedian talking. If you don\u2019t like it, don\u2019t watch it\u2026 Let the people decide,\u201d he continued. \u201cIf people like a show, it stays on the air. I mean, that\u2019s as simple as that. I enjoy Jimmy. I like all the guys. I think they\u2019re really talented. I like jokes. That\u2019s why I watch them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Leno\u2019s comments come after a tense history with Kimmel. In 2010, Kimmel appeared on The Tonight Show<\/em> and \u201chumiliated\u201d Leno when he brought up the drama surrounding Conan O\u2019Brien<\/a>. In 2009, O\u2019Brien took over as host of The Tonight Show<\/em>, only to leave the following year after NBC pushed his show back in place of a new Leno late-night show.<\/p>\n

During his Tonight Show<\/em> appearance, Leno asked Kimmel about his best prank, to which he replied, \u201cI told a guy that five years from now I\u2019m going to give you my show, and then when the five years came, I gave it to him, and then I took it back almost instantly.\u201d<\/p>\n

Speaking on In Depth with Graham Bensinger<\/em><\/a> earlier this year, Leno brought up Kimmel\u2019s 2010 Tonight Show<\/em> appearance, saying, per Daily Beast<\/em>, that it was a mistake to let Kimmel\u00a0\u201chumiliate me on my own show.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI trusted somebody,\u201d he added. \u201cIt started a whole thing that continues to this day really. He\u2019s a comic. You do what you got to do. Okay. I mean, I wouldn\u2019t have done it, but that\u2019s okay. It is what it is.\u201d<\/p>\n
