John Cena<\/a> wasn\u2019t the first choice to play Peacemaker. However, he doesn\u2019t seem to be bothered by that fact.<\/p>\n Last week, James Gunn revealed that he originally created the Peacemaker role with Dave Bautista in mind. He told Howard Stern<\/a> that Bautista chose other movie projects at the time, which allowed Cena to step into the role.<\/p>\n \u201cI wrote the character of Peacemaker for him, and we offered him the role,\u201d Gunn said. \u201cBut [he] was offered two movies. We weren\u2019t paying him a lot, so he had to go where the money was.\u201d<\/p>\n Cena was recently asked about Gunn\u2019s revelation during a new interview with GQ<\/a>, which was released shortly after the fifth episode of Peacemaker<\/em>\u2018s second season aired on Thursday. Cena said he doesn\u2019t care where he fell on Gunn\u2019s list. He noted that he\u2019s lucky to have the opportunity to play the role in the first place.<\/p>\n \u201cWell, I mean, first of all, I could care less about being anybody\u2019s first, second, third or fourth pick. Opportunity in life comes to you in a myriad of different ways,\u201d Cena explained. \u201cAnd if I wanted to be salty about like, \u201cOh, I wasn\u2019t first pick, that\u2019s beneath me.\u201d I wouldn\u2019t have ever gotten a chance. And keep in mind I got killed off in The Suicide Squad<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n Cena says he formed a friendship with Gunn on the set of the 2021 film, and he believes that gave the director a chance to know him. Cena says it\u2019s very easy to stereotype him based on how often he was on WWE TV. However, Gunn got to know him on a deeper level and saw what he could add to the character on the television show, which essentially retconned his character\u2019s fate in the movie.<\/p>\n \u201cI think he saw nuance in the performance he was able to bring out of me. \u2018There\u2019s more to this guy.
