A week ahead of the release of \u201cThief of Joy,\u201d we chatted with Soresi for a good half hour. Here\u2019s what the freewheeling comic had to say.<\/p>\n
Do you have a favorite moment or bit from the special that got left on the cutting room floor? <\/strong><\/p>\nYeah. It was originally 80 minutes. We cut a lot. We cut a joke that I\u2019ve been doing since my first year that I worried I\u2019d put out too much.<\/em><\/p>\nIt\u2019s about my father. He\u2019s Italian and we kiss each other goodbye. One day, my roommate asked \u201cdo you kiss each other in public?\u201d And I said \u201cyeah, it\u2019d be weird if I only kissed him in private.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\nMy girlfriend, who is also my manager, is my guiding light in terms of telling me \u201cI think that\u2019s been done\u201d in a way that it would feel like an audience member might think \u201cI\u2019ve already heard that part.\u201d So, I left it out.<\/em><\/p>\nBut, some of these jokes I\u2019ve had since I started standup and I could point to every bit of it where I hadn\u2019t yet figured out how to deliver the lines to their fullest potential.<\/em><\/p>\nWhat are you bringing to the stage when you\u2019re on the road these days?<\/strong> <\/p>\nI\u2019m retiring all the material from this special [\u201cThief of Joy\u201d]. So, right now, I\u2019m talking about artificial intelligence and the ways it feels like A.I. and robotics have moved past helping human beings.<\/em><\/p>\nI try to paint my dad in a more positive light because I found out he\u2019s been on Ashley Madison and a number of other dating apps. A woman reached out to me and said she decided to not to date my father partially because of my jokes. So I had to try and readjust that so I can get a new stepmom.<\/em><\/p>\nIn this past special, I talked about egg freezing, now I\u2019m talking more about the philosophy of bringing another human life into this world. What kind of parent would I be? Do I want to get married? What are the consequences of getting married, not married?<\/em><\/p>\nAnd I talk about how COVID shifted our culture to the point that it informed what our government is now. I\u2019m trying to capture those reflections with a little bit of distance.<\/em><\/p>\nYou\u2019ve become somewhat known for crowd work. Is that still a large part of your show when people see you on the road?<\/strong><\/p>\nIt\u2019s dependent on the layout of the space.<\/em><\/p>\nIf you\u2019re in a theater, the people in the back can\u2019t hear. Still, I always try to incorporate it to a certain degree. It makes it exciting for me.<\/em> I hate doing the same thing over and over. I can\u2019t guarantee how much crowd work will be there. I can guarantee you will be getting at least 80% of material.<\/em><\/p>\nI often find that you could do crowd work for two minutes, and if it\u2019s great, the audience will have gotten their fix. They got to feel that they were part of something that only happened on this show, that was risky.<\/em><\/p>\nWhy should people come see you live? <\/strong><\/p>\nI\u2019m going to put on a full show. <\/em><\/p>\nOnce there was a New York comedy club booker who didn\u2019t pass me because they said I was too \u201cone-man show.\u201d I told my friends at the time \u201cI can mumble. I can f\u2014ing stand still.\u201d And I honestly don\u2019t think I can.<\/em><\/p>\nI\u2019m able to deliver a lot. Even if I go to Europe and the audience members don\u2019t fully understand all the jokes, they appreciate how animated I am.<\/em><\/p>\n
