The cast of S.W.A.T. has weathered multiple cancellations while continuing to advocate for more seasons of the show \u2014 but that doesn\u2019t mean everyone is returning<\/a> for the surprise spinoff.<\/p>\n

Based on the 1975 TV show and 2003 film adaptation of the same name, S.W.A.T. centered around<\/a> the Los Angeles Police Department. The CBS series premiered in 2017 and aired six seasons before it was picked up for a seventh and final season. CBS ultimately reversed that decision and S.W.A.T. returned for season 8. But the celebration didn\u2019t last long \u2014 the network canceled the show for a second time in March 2025.<\/p>\n

S.W.A.T. seemingly came to an end two months later when the series finale aired on CBS. In the final episode, the team survived yet another mission and the last scene showed 20 Squad leaving headquarters to take on their next crisis.<\/p>\n

Just two days after the finale aired, Sony Pictures Television picked up a spinoff titled S.W.A.T. Exiles<\/a>, which will pick up after \u201ca high-profile mission goes sideways, Daniel \u2018Hondo\u2019 Harrelson is pulled out of forced retirement to lead a last-chance experimental SWAT unit made up of untested, unpredictable young recruits.\u201d Shemar Moore\u2019s character must \u201cbridge a generational divide, navigate clashing personalities, and turn a squad of outsiders into a team capable of protecting the city and saving the program that made him who he is.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tCBS\u2019 S.W.A.T. is just the latest of many shows that went through multiple cancellations before the decision finally stuck. While most shows on CBS have had exceptional luck, S.W.A.T. was put through the wringer. Based on the 1975 TV show and 2003 film adaptation of the same name, S.W.A.T. centered on the Los Angeles Police [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Moore reacted to the 10-episode continuation of S.W.A.T., saying in a statement, \u201cMy eight seasons on S.W.A.T. have been epic and memorable. We entertained the world, defied the odds, came back from the dead twice, and continued to woo fans and families worldwide.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued: \u201cI am excited for this next generation and iteration of S.W.A.T. with Sony. Katherine Pope, Neal H. Moritz, Jason Ning, and I will keep the franchise, thrill ride action, heartfelt drama, and storytelling of S.W.A.T. alive. WE DON\u2019T LOSE!!!! ROLL SWAT!!!\u201d<\/p>\n

While Moore\u2019s return was announced, fans couldn\u2019t help but notice that the rest of the cast wasn\u2019t confirmed<\/a>. The last season of S.W.A.T also starred Jay Harrington, David Lim, Patrick St. Esprit, Anna Enger Ritch, Annie Ilonzeh<\/strong> and Niko Pepaj<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

And guess what happens when you don\u2019t stop fighting? We won! S.W.A.T. ain\u2019t going nowhere! Hondo ain\u2019t going nowhere!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201c[I found out about S.W.A.T Exiles] the day before. Shemar reached out to all of us to say, \u2018This is what\u2019s going on,’\u201d Harrington told TVLine in June 2025. \u201cThere\u2019s talk that they\u2019ll reach out to us about stuff. He wanted to be the one to tell us, and say \u2018Your reps will find out shortly.\u2019 That\u2019s when I told my reps, and they had no idea.\u201d<\/p>\n

Harrington clarified he wasn\u2019t upset with Moore for signing onto the show solo, adding, \u201cLook, I\u2019ll be very clear. I\u2019ve been in this business for a long time. You don\u2019t get \u2018owed\u2019 things just because you put in your time. If that\u2019s the route they\u2019re going to go, I wish it success. It\u2019s just a fine line between \u2018owed\u2019 and \u2018just let me know.\u2019 For the studio just to say, \u2018Hey, this is what we\u2019re thinking. It\u2019s a new idea, but this is the route we gotta go, and unfortunately the way it\u2019s structured, we want to make a clean break, start fresh.’\u201d<\/p>\n

Harrington will appear in the pilot.<\/p>\n

David Lim<\/h3>\n

When viewers last saw Tan, he accepted a liaison position but remained in the field with the rest of 20 Squad. Lim, meanwhile, has yet to address the surprise spinoff but has expressed interest in remaining in the universe.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt might not be just over for S.W.A.T. just yet,\u201d he said on KTLA 5 Morning News in April 2025. \u201cWe believe in the show. We believe in what we\u2019ve built. We\u2019re passionate. We want to continue. We\u2019re actively trying to find a new home for S.W.A.T., and there\u2019s been an outpouring of love and support from our fans.\u201d<\/p>\n

Anna Enger Ritch<\/h3>\n

Ritch, who plays Zoe Powell, has pitched ideas for what other stories there are still left to tell, sharing with Collider in March 2023, \u201cI think it would be interesting to see the women go through trying to juggle what it would be like to have a family and also maintain a SWAT tactical officer career. I don\u2019t think that\u2019s anything I\u2019ve ever dove into on this show particularly, but hopefully, as we continue, should we continue, that would be an interesting exploration.\u201d<\/p>\n

The actress, however, hasn\u2019t sounded off on the spinoff \u2014 or whether Powell will appear<\/a> \u2014 yet.<\/p>\n

Before news of S.W.A.T. Exiles broke, Ilonzeh spoke with Us Weekly about attempts to revive<\/a> the series.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are crossing our fingers. So there is a particular discussion being had. I hope I can say [soon] that we really did it. We rallied for a third time,\u201d she shared in April 2025 while reflecting on her time playing Gamble. \u201cBut we\u2019re making noise. They do see it \u2014 producers and streamers that are interested \u2014 they are like, \u2018OK, this is something.\u2019 So if we can plug and play, we\u2019re all geared up to go. We don\u2019t want this ride to be over.\u201d<\/p>\n
