It was Scherzer&#8217;s shortest outing since facing just one batter while pitching for Washington on June 11, 2021, before leaving with an injury. Also, Scherzer&#8217;s seven runs conceded in the first inning are the most allowed in any inning of his career.<\/p>\n<p>According to ESPN Research, Toronto&#8217;s 19-run loss ties the largest by a division leader in a September or later regular-season game, joining the previous dubious mark set by the Padres&#8217; 20-1 loss to the Rockies in 2005.<\/p>\n<p>Following a homer by <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/32078\/george-springer\">George Springer<\/a> in the top of the first inning, the Royals quickly tied it in the bottom of the inning on <a target=\"_blank\" data-player-guid=\"d150a5fe-4c9b-3558-b886-12ea0e66cfc1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/4917812\/carter-jensen\">Carter Jensen<\/a>&#8216;s leadoff double and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/42403\/bobby-witt-jr\">Bobby Witt Jr<\/a>.&#8217;s RBI single. Witt scored on <a target=\"_blank\" data-player-guid=\"1504857a-3703-3a40-95e4-f56bcf111a37\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/4109109\/vinnie-pasquantino\">Vinnie Pasquantino<\/a>&#8216;s double into the left-field corner to give Kansas City the lead for good.<\/p>\n<p>After a walk to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/4905884\/maikel-garcia\">Maikel Garcia<\/a> &#8212; and Toronto pitching coach Pete Walker&#8217;s ejection &#8212; Perez connected for his 30th home run. <a target=\"_blank\" data-player-guid=\"a5440d78-cac3-3ab3-abf2-5c38b24a596c\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/4109223\/michael-massey\">Michael Massey<\/a>&#8216;s two-run homer gave Kansas City a 7-1 lead.<\/p>\n<p>Batting leadoff for the first time, Jensen hit three doubles &#8212; two against Scherzer in the first and a two-run double in the third. Jensen became the first Royals player with multiple doubles in the same inning.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/4926296\/jac-caglianone\">Jac Caglianone<\/a> hit a three-run homer in the seventh as the Royals had 10 runs and 13 hits in 1\u2153 innings against catcher <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/_\/id\/33142\/tyler-heineman\">Tyler Heineman<\/a>.
