\u201cI don\u2019t think what he said was exactly right. I don\u2019t,\u201d said Maher. \u201cWe don\u2019t agree on that,\u201d Maher said during his opening monologue, adding, \u201cHe shouldn\u2019t lose his job for it.\u201d<\/p>\n
Maher appeared to take issue with Kimmel\u2019s pushback against right-wing rhetoric suggesting that Kirk\u2019s suspected killer, Tyler Robinson, was a Democrat.<\/p>\n
\u201cJimmy\u2019s wrong, I think, to put [Robinson] in one team. But, you know, look at what this guy is doing,\u201d Maher said. \u201cI mean, Jimmy has every right to be wrong, but look at this guy.\u201d<\/p>\n
Kimmel\u2019s comments\u2014which have been defended by fellow talk-show hosts including Stephen Colbert, Jon Stewart, Conan O\u2019Brien, and David Letterman\u2014drew the fury of President Donald Trump, who described them as \u201ca horrible thing about a great gentleman.\u201d<\/p>\n
ABC pulled Jimmy Kimmel Live! <\/i>following an announcement from parent company Nexstar Media that Kimmel\u2019s comments were \u201coffensive and insensitive.\u201d<\/p>\n
Brendan Carr, the Trump-appointed head of the Federal Communications Commission, described Kimmel\u2019s comments as an attempt to \u201cplay into a narrative that this was somehow a MAGA or Republican-motivated person.\u201d<\/p>\n
Maher went on to add that trying to pigeonhole \u201cnuts\u201d who commit acts of violence like Robinson is a \u201cfalse errand.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThis kid doesn\u2019t belong in either party. He belongs in a straitjacket. He\u2019s an outpatient who should not be out,\u201d Maher said.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut you have the right to be wrong or to have any opinion you want,\u201d Maher added. \u201cThat\u2019s what the First Amendment is all about.\u201d<\/p>\n
Sharing an anecdote about the fact it has been 24 years since Maher himself was cancelled on ABC, opening a slot for Kimmel, the Real Time<\/i> host said his \u201cfriend\u201d and \u201ccompatriot\u201d would be OK.<\/p>\n
\u201cJimmy, let me just say, you did a great, funny show for two decades. You should be proud of that,\u201d Maher said.<\/p>\n
