Halsey, the singer-songwriter who rose to fame with her 2015 debut \u201cBadlands,\u201d revealed that she is currently unable to release new music, citing restrictions from her record label following the commercial performance of her most recent project, \u201cThe Great Impersonator.\u201d<\/p>\n
In an interview with Apple Music\u2019s Zane Lowe released Sept. 18, the 30-year-old artist said, \u201cI can\u2019t make an album right now\u2014I\u2019m not allowed to. That\u2019s the reality, because \u2018The Great Impersonator\u2019 didn\u2019t perform the way they thought it was going to.\u201d<\/p>\n
She emphasized that the album sold roughly 100,000 copies in its first week, and that her accompanying tour was the most successful of her career. Yet the label reportedly expected sales on the scale of her 2020 double-platinum album, \u201cManic.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI can\u2019t do that every single time,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Halsey, whose legal name is Ashley Nicolette Frangipane, framed the situation as part of the challenge of evolving beyond her status as a pop star. \u201cThat\u2019s the hardest part of having been a pop star once,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019m not one anymore, but I\u2019m being compared to numbers and to other people that I don\u2019t consider lateral to me.\u201d<\/p>\n
Her remarks come as she prepares to embark on the \u201cBack to Badlands Tour,\u201d<\/a> celebrating the 10th anniversary of her debut. Following the birth of her son in 2021, she disclosed in 2022 that she had been diagnosed with several chronic conditions, including Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, Sjogren\u2019s syndrome, mast cell activation syndrome, and postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome.<\/p>\n She described \u201cThe Great Impersonator\u201d as a labor of personal resilience: \u201cLong story short, I\u2019m lucky to be alive.
