When you\u2019ve been rocking for as long as Joe Perry<\/a><\/strong>, you make plenty of friends\u2014many of whom came out in force when the Aerosmith<\/strong> guitarist\u2019s side band, The Joe Perry Project<\/strong>, opened up for The Who<\/strong> at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles on Sept. 17.<\/p>\n Perry formed the eponymous band after he exited Aerosmith in 1979. JPP released a trio of albums in the early ’80s\u2014Let the Music Do the Talking, I\u2019ve Got the Rock & Rolls Again, and\u00a0Once a Rocker, Always a Rocker\u2014before Perry ultimately returned to Aerosmith in \u201984. JPP stayed dormant, for the most part, with a few performances over the decades. But when Aerosmith announced its retirement in May 2025, Perry decided to bring it back<\/a>.<\/p>\n This new incarnation of JPP is a classic rock supergroup: the lineup includes Perry\u2019s Aerosmith bandmate Brad Whitford <\/strong>on guitar, former Stone Temple Pilots <\/strong>bassist Robert DeLeo,<\/strong> ex-Smash Mouth <\/strong>drummer Jason Sutter<\/strong>, and Black Crowes\u2019 <\/strong>vocalist Chris Robinson. <\/strong>But these weren\u2019t the only A-listers sharing the stage with Joe Perry on Wednesday.<\/p>\n According to Ultimate Classic Rock<\/a>, Steven Tyler<\/a><\/strong> came out to help Perry and the band perform Aerosmith\u2019s \u201cWalk This Way.\u201d Afterwards, with Tyler playing a train whistle, the band did a version of Aerosmith\u2019s cover of Tiny Bradshaw<\/strong>\u2019s \u201cTrain Kept A-Rollin\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n Earlier in the set, Guns \u2018N Roses <\/strong>guitar legend Slash <\/strong>joined JPP to cover Aerosmith\u2019s \u201cMama Kin.\u201d Slash traded licks with Perry and Whitford, according to UCR, giving the thousands attending the show an experience of a lifetime.<\/p>\n JPP played a short set, most of which were Aerosmith covers. The supergroup also performed hits from members\u2019 other bands: the Black Crowes\u2019 \u201cTwice as Hard\u201d and Stone Temple Pilots\u2019 \u201cVasoline.\u201d<\/p>\n Aerosmith officially retired<\/a> in August 2024, a year after they started the short-lived \u201cPeace Out\u201d farewell tour. Tyler suffered a serious vocal injury three shows into the tour, prompting the band to first postpone the tour before ultimately pulling the plug.<\/p>\n Since then, Tyler has delivered some high-profile performances<\/a>, including one alongside YUNGBLUD <\/strong>at the 2025 MTV VMAs tribute to Ozzy Osbourne<\/strong>. Soon afterwards, Aerosmith announced they were teaming with YUNGBLUD for a new song<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cI would bet that there\u2019s an Aerosmith show left,\u201d\u00a0said Perry in an August interview<\/a>. \u201cThere\u2019s been talk about doing a documentary, that might be part of it.
