\n\tOn Friday, Sinclair<\/a> had planned to replace the \u201cJimmy Kimmel<\/a>\u00a0Live!\u201d timeslot on its ABC-affiliated stations with a\u00a0special news segment on Charlie Kirk<\/a>, the conservative activist who was assassinated earlier this month.<\/p>\n

\n\tBut the TV station group owner abruptly reversed course \u2014 saying it had decided to post the Kirk special on YouTube, not on its ABC local stations, so that \u201cviewers can continue to enjoy ABC programming.\u201d On Friday, the 11:35 p.m. one-hour slot on ABC was a rerun of \u201cCelebrity Family Feud\u201d hosted by Steve Harvey. ABC also ran \u201cCelebrity Family Feud\u201d eps on Sept. 17 and 18 after \u201cindefinitely\u201d suspending Kimmel\u2019s show over on-air comments he made about Kirk\u2019s killer<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\tSinclair said in a statement<\/a> posted Friday at 11:24 p.m. ET, \u201cTonight, Sinclair will continue to air ABC network programming as scheduled in the late-night time period. The Charlie Kirk<\/a> special will instead be available on The National News Desk\u2019s YouTube channel, ensuring viewers can continue to enjoy ABC programming while also providing full access to the special online.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSinclair and Nexstar Media Group, another big ABC affiliate, said Sept. 17 they were pulling \u201cJimmy Kimmel Live!\u201d from their lineups over what Kimmel said on his show Monday: \u201cWe hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize the kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them, and doing everything they can to score political points from it.\u201d MAGA supporters, interpreting that as Kimmel saying Kirk\u2019s assassin was \u201cone of them,\u201d became outraged. The Nexstar and Sinclair announcements were preceded by comments FCC chairman Brendan Carr made on a conservative podcast, strongly implying ABC and its affiliates would be targeted by the agency if\u00a0they didn\u2019t \u201ctake action\u201d<\/a>\u00a0on Kimmel (in other words, pull his show off the air). \u201cWe can do this the easy way or the hard way,\u201d Carr said.<\/p>\n

\n\tFollowing pressure from affiliates and Carr\u2019s threat, an ABC spokesperson said in a statement Wednesday: \u201c\u2019Jimmy Kimmel Live!\u2019 will be pre-empted indefinitely.\u201d Kimmel has not commented on the matter. Variety<\/em>\u00a0reported Friday that\u00a0Kimmel and Disney execs are in talks on a compromise to bring the show back on the air<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\tSinclair, well known for its conservative politics, on Wednesday said that before it would consider returning \u201cKimmel\u201d to its ABC affiliates, Kimmel must apologize to Kirk\u2019s family and send \u201ca meaningful personal donation\u201d to them as well as Turning Point USA, the organization Kirk founded.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cMr. Kimmel\u2019s remarks were inappropriate and deeply insensitive at a critical moment for our country,\u201d Sinclair vice chairman Jason Smith said in a statement issued Sept. 17. \u201cWe believe broadcasters have a responsibility to educate and elevate respectful, constructive dialogue in our communities. We appreciate FCC Chairman Carr\u2019s remarks today and this incident highlights the critical need for the FCC to take immediate regulatory action to address control held over local broadcasters by the big national networks.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSinclair operates 38 ABC affiliates, including WJLA (Washington, D.C.); KOMO (Seattle); KDNL (St. Louis); KATV (Little Rock, Ark.); KTUL (Tulsa, Okla.); WTVC (Chattanooga, Tenn.); and WCIV (Charleston, S.C.).<\/p>\n
