In this piece, which was first published in 2022, we revisit the moment in 1996 when an incognito Chris Morris snuck into the audience of Stapleton\u2019s long-running chat show The Time, The Place. His mission? To bamboozle the presenter with a bizarre theory about sex in the Saxon world. But in the unflappable Stapleton he had met his match&#8230;.<\/em><\/p>\n<hr class=\"my-4\"\/>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">As <em>Brass Eye<\/em> dropped celebrities into a steaming, self-humiliating vat of pure hot topic \u2013 see Phil Collins talking \u201cNonce Sense\u201d about paedophilia, or Noel Edmonds warning ravers about<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/on-demand\/0\/cakegate-20-brass-eyes-drug-hoax-tells-us-fake-news\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:the dangers of Cake;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\"> the dangers of Cake <\/a>(\u201ca made-up drug\u201d) \u2013 Chris Morris, <em>Brass Eye<\/em>\u2019s chief architect and Paxmanian prankster, also set out to sabotage a cosy bastion of Middle England: daytime television.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">His target: audience participation chat show <em>The Time, The Place<\/em>. The topic: \u201cAre British men lousy lovers?\u201d Posing as an academic named Thurston Lowe, Morris attempted to bamboozle the show\u2019s presenter, John Stapleton, with amusing twaddle about ancient Saxon sex and four-legged breasts \u2013 until Morris was hilariously rumbled on live TV.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The episode aired in June 1996. Stapleton remembers it well. \u201cI couldn\u2019t forget it, could I?\u201d he laughs. \u201cForty-five years in television, covering wars, elections, tsunamis\u2026 but the thing that gets tweeted and played most of all is bloody Chris Morris. There you are, that\u2019s television for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Two years earlier, Morris had played a sneering, pompous anchor on the spoof news show, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/tv\/0\/day-today-10-sketches-wouldnt-get-away-2019-stories-behind\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:The Day Today;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">The Day Today <\/a>\u2013 a predecessor to <em>Brass Eye<\/em>, Morris\u2019s merciless current affairs satire. A <em>Brass Eye<\/em> pilot was in the works at the BBC as early as 1995. But the BBC didn\u2019t have the nerve for a whole series, so it was picked up by Channel 4.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><em>Brass Eye <\/em>tackled big subjects: current affairs favourites which included sex, drugs, and science. Public figures were roped in to support fake campaigns, such as A.A.A.A.A.A.A.Z. (Against Animal Anger and Autocasual Abuse Atrocities in Zoo), and unwittingly spout drivel. The point, perhaps, was not to ridicule celebs personally, but the outsized authority given to their voices.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cI remember Chris saying quite early on that he wanted to do a show focusing on a different subject every week,\u201d says co-writer Peter Baynham. \u201cWhen he said we\u2019re going to do these campaigns, I thought that was so exciting. It was so much fun thinking up the campaigns \u2013 an elephant with a trunk stuck up her arse [Paul Daniels pleaded help for that poor elephant], or a girl who got squashed by heavy electricity [which was falling out of power lines in Sri Lanka and squashing people, so the celebs explained].\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><em>Brass Eye<\/em> was underway when Morris invaded <em>The Time, The Place<\/em>. Stapleton thinks the stunt was intended for <em>Brass Eye<\/em> \u2013 though it isn\u2019t featured in the finished series. Why did you have it? Did you feel under pressure to hang onto your looks?\u201d). From those calls, a handful of people were picked as nominated speakers for the on-air debate. \u201cHe must have called in,\u201d says Stapleton about Morris. \u201cI\u2019ve no idea what he told the researcher who picked up the phone \u2013 presumably it was a load of nonsense! They should never have allowed him to get on and say what he said on air.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">During filming at a Nottingham studio, Stapleton set up the \u201cAre British men lousy lovers?\u201d debate with Alan Partridge-esque panache. \u201cHave you ever fallen for a Frenchman\u2019s flattery? Lost your heart to a Latin lover? Or been swept off your feet by a sweet-talking Spaniard? Yes? But you married a <em>Brit<\/em>. Morris explained how Roman women shipped themselves to Britain to be serviced by wild native Saxons; that the mythical minotaur was sometimes depicted as a giant boob with four legs; and why Athena, the Goddess of Wisdom, was considered wise \u2013 because she had a brain in her breast.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cI was standing there thinking, \u2018Is this guy for real? What is this guy on about? Brains in their breasts?\u2019\u201d recalls Stapleton. \u201cYou\u2019ve got a lot to think about on these shows \u2013 a lot of guests to get to. I thought, let\u2019s just listen to the guy and move on as quickly as I can without appearing rude.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Watched back, it\u2019s the unsuspecting audience members that really make it \u2013 a befuddled woman sat behind Morris, and a man sniggering to his left, clearly sussing that it\u2019s all a big wind-up. \u201cThe best moment of all \u2013 brilliantly done by our vision mixer \u2013 is when he started talking about women having brains in their breasts,\u201d says Stapleton. \u201cThere was a cutaway shot of one of our agony aunts, who was a lovely lady, looking down her blouse to see if she could see anything. So, what do I do? Do I go into the second half of the show and take him apart? In which case, if he <em>is<\/em> who says he is, I\u2019ll look stupid. Or do I ignore it, go back to him, and get more of this nonsense? In which case I\u2019ll also look stupid. I decided on a middle course.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cYou\u2019re very familiar,\u201d said Stapleton, at which point Morris revealed another alias. No, he wasn\u2019t really called Thurston Lowe, he admitted, but \u201cPeter Davis\u201d. He claimed to have a book coming out, and his publisher had asked him not to use his real name on the show \u2013 a fact he\u2019d supposedly told the show\u2019s researchers. Stapleton wasn\u2019t convinced. \u201cChristopher Morris, does that ring a bell?\u201d he asked. The audience must have been pretty bewildered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Stapleton confronted Morris afterwards. \u201cI was pretty pissed off, I can tell you that,\u201d Stapleton says. \u201cI explained to him that I wasn\u2019t too pleased. It was probably an overreaction on my part. Because at the end of the day, does it matter? Of course it doesn\u2019t. I just felt a bit used and abused, as it were. Also, you don\u2019t want that sort of thing to start a trend because it undermines the programme. But we all laughed about it afterwards.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">If the stunt <em>was<\/em> intended for <em>Brass Eye<\/em>, it wasn\u2019t the only thing that didn\u2019t make the broadcast. The series was briefly delayed while Channel 4 boss Michael Grade fretted over its controversial content \u2013 pushed back from November 1996 until its debut on January 29, 1997. A skit about Peter Sutcliffe, in which Sutcliffe is released from prison to star in his own West End musical, was removed before broadcast \u2013 Grade\u2019s reaction to a <em>Daily Mail<\/em> campaign against <em>Brass Eye<\/em>. Morris responded by sneaking a subliminal message into one frame of the episode: \u201cGrade is a c\u2013\u2013\u2013\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">When <em>Brass Eye<\/em> returned in 2001 for a special about paedophile hysteria, its skewering of moral panics almost started one. <em>The Mail<\/em> branded <em>Brass Eye<\/em> \u201cthe sickest TV show ever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cIt was bonkers after the paedophile special,\u201d says Baynham. \u201cIt was clear that it was satire. I remember the <em>News of the World<\/em> printed a centre spread saying \u2018these people must never work in television again\u2019. They\u2019d just gone through the credits of the show. Sound supervisor, catering. They included Peter Fincham who went on to become controller of BBC One! I took it completely seriously at the time. It was almost like their attempt at cancelling before cancelling came along \u2013 they tried to cancel us all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Morris\u2019s appearance on <em>The Time, The Place<\/em> became a small cult moment within the notoriety of <em>Brass Eye<\/em>. Now, Stapleton takes it all in impeccably good humour \u2013 there\u2019s an amusing coda, too. \u201cYears later, my son, who lives in London, advertised a bike for sale \u2013 and guess who knocked on the door?\u201d he says. \u201cMy son said, \u2018I think you know my dad!\u2019 He never came back to buy it\u2026 No hard feelings, it was a bit of fun.
