James Van Der Beek<\/a> has been forced to pull out of the Dawson\u2019s Creek<\/a><\/em> reunion due to illness. <\/p>\n

The 48-year-old actor is recovering from two stomach viruses while undergoing treatment for stage three colorectal cancer.<\/p>\n

The father-of-six announced the news on Instagram on Sunday night, saying he was \u201cgutted\u201d to be missing out on the reunion, which was first announced in August. <\/p>\n

\u201cThis is the evening I\u2019d been looking forward to MOST since my angel Michelle Williams<\/a> said she was putting it together, way back in January,\u201d he wrote. \u201cSo you can imagine how gutted I was when two stomach viruses conspired to knock me out of commission and keep me grounded at the worst possible moment. Despite every effort\u2026 I won\u2019t get to be there.<\/p>\n

He then announced that Lin-Manuel Miranda, the creator of the hit Broadway musical Hamilton<\/em>, will be stepping into the role of Dawson for him. <\/p>\n

\u201cBut I DO have an understudy,\u201d he continued. \u201cA ridiculously overqualified replacement who would have been #1 on my wishlist (had I ever dreamed he\u2019d be available).<\/p>\n

\u201cSomeone my kids would definitely consider an upgrade over me\u2026 Plus, he already knows how to get to the theatre. So that\u2019s convenient. The role of \u2018Dawson,\u2019 usually played by James Van Der Beek\u2026Will be played by Lin-Manuel Miranda. Can\u2019t believe I just got to type that.\u201d<\/p>\n

The reunion, which will see the cast of Dawson\u2019s Creek<\/em> reunite for the first time in 23 years, will raise funds to support James and the cancer charity F Cancer. <\/p>\n

Joshua Jackson, Katie Holmes<\/a>, Michelle Williams, Mary Beth Peil, John Wesley Shipp, Mary-Margaret Humes, Nina Repeta, Kerr Smith, Meredith Monroe and Busy Philipps are all set to attend the reunion, where they will do a table read of the pilot episode. <\/p>\n

Michelle Williams, who played James\u2019 onscreen love interest in the first season of the series, reached out to show creator Kevin Williamson one month after James announced his diagnosis with the idea of doing a reunion. <\/p>\n

\u201cI jumped at the idea,\u201d he told Variety.<\/em><\/a> \u201cShe enlisted me, Thomas [Kail] and Greg [Berlanti] to help. From there, others joined the planning party. Jason Moore agreed to direct, and we were off and running. Picking a date took some time but our entire \u2018Dawson\u2019s Creek\u2019 family was excited to do this and very accommodating and generous with their time.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Tickets to the event sold out within minutes and the theatre has since released more tickets which cost $199 to $1500 a pop. The cast will also be posing for photos with fans after the event for $600. <\/p>\n

\u201cI was blown away by the reaction,\u201d Kevin told the publication. \u201cI\u2019m so thrilled our show has made such a lasting impact and continues to resonate with fans today.\u201d<\/p>\n
