Diane Martel<\/a>, the prolific music video director, has died at 63.<\/p>\nHer family confirmed her death following a breast cancer diagnosis in a statement on Thursday, Sept. 18. \u201cDiane passed away peacefully at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital\u00a0\u2013 surrounded by friends and family \u2013 after a long battle with breast cancer,\u201d her family said, via Rolling Stone<\/a>.<\/p>\nThroughout her career, she worked with artists, directing iconic music videos that defined generations and became pop culture milestones.<\/p>\n

Ciara<\/a> paid tribute to Martel in an Instagram post<\/a> on Friday, Sept. 19. “You believed in me and I believed in you! You will forever hold a special place in my heart and I am forever grateful for all the magic we\u2019ve were able to make together,” she captioned a series of clips from her music videos.<\/p>\n“I know it was all God! Heaven has just gained an Angel. I love you so much @DianeMartel_ A.k.a. Miss D! Rest In Paradise \u2764\ufe0f.”<\/p>\n

Martel, born on\u00a0May 7, 1962, in New York, dropped out of high school and became involved in the performing arts, working as a dancer and choreographer. She began directing with the 1992 PBS documentary Reckin\u2019 Shop: Live From Brooklyn. It led to her first music video directing credit, “Throw Ya Gunz” for rap group Onyz.<\/p>\n
