John Oliver<\/a> shared his thoughts on the Jimmy Kimmel<\/a> suspension on Sunday\u2019s (September 21) episode of HBO\u2019s Last Week Tonight<\/em><\/a>, where he encouraged viewers to cancel their Disney+ and Hulu subscriptions.<\/p>\n

After calling the decision to suspend Jimmy Kimmel Live!<\/em><\/a> a \u201cclear case of the government trying to censor speech,\u201d Oliver said that Disney and ABC should be standing by Kimmel in the face of government censorship. The comedian then noted there are ways viewers can \u201cencourage them to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou could exert pressure on them by canceling Disney+ or Hulu,\u201d Oliver stated. \u201cGoogle searches on that have skyrocketed in the past few days.\u201d<\/p>\n

Oliver\u2019s comments come just days after She-Hulk<\/em><\/a> (which streams on Disney+) star Tatiana Maslany<\/a> encouraged her fans to do the same.<\/p>\n

Kimmel was \u201csuspended indefinitely\u201d on Wednesday (September 17) over comments he made about Charlie Kirk<\/a>\u2018s fatal shooting on Monday\u2019s (September 15) Jimmy Kimmel Liv<\/em>e. This came after powerful station group Nexstar announced it would preempt the show on its 32 ABC affiliate stations late Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Earlier that day, Trump-appointed Federal Communications Commission chairman Brendan Carr\u00a0told right-wing podcaster Benny Johnson<\/a>, \u201cWe can do this the easy way or the hard way. These companies can find ways to change conduct and take actions on Kimmel, or there\u2019s going to be additional work for the FCC ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cABC and its parent company Disney still have a chance to do the right thing here. I do get that the easier path for them right now is to keep him off the air and the administration off their back,\u201d Oliver added on Sunday\u2019s show. \u201cThough, I will point out, that was the apparent argument for ABC paying Trump $15 million last year, and how did that work out for them?\u201d<\/p>\n

Oliver was referencing the December 2024 settlement over Trump\u2019s defamation lawsuit against ABC News. \u201cGiving the bully your lunch money doesn\u2019t make him go away; it just makes him come back hungrier each time. They are never going to stop,\u201d the comedian added, addressing Disney CEO Bob Iger. \u201cAt some point, you\u2019re going to have to try to draw a line. Why not draw it right here?\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued, \u201cAnd when they come to you with stupid ridiculous demands, picking fights that you know you could win in court instead of rolling over, why not stand up and use four key words they don\u2019t tend to teach you in business school. Not \u2018Okay, you\u2019re the boss.\u2019 Not \u2018Whatever you say goes.\u2019 But instead, the only phrase that can genuinely make a weak bully go away. And that is, \u2018F*** you, make me.’\u201d<\/p>\n
