As Jimmy Kimmel Live<\/a>!\u00a0returns to ABC on Tuesday night and millions of screens across America tune in in, swaths of the country will only have access to \u201cnews programming\u201d instead of the late-night show. Broadcasting giant Sinclair announced that it would not air Kimmel\u2019s show despite its return to the airwaves this week.<\/p>\n \u201cBeginning Tuesday night, Sinclair will be preempting\u00a0Jimmy Kimmel Live!\u00a0across our ABC affiliate stations and replacing it with news programming,\u201d Sinclair\u00a0said in a statement to Rolling Stone on Monday. \u201cDiscussions with ABC are ongoing as we evaluate the show\u2019s potential return.\u201d<\/p>\n More from Rolling Stone<\/strong><\/p>\n Last week, ABC \u201cindefinitely<\/a>\u201d suspended Kimmel after comments he made on\u00a0Jimmy Kimmel Live<\/a>!\u00a0about about the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk and following a\u00a0threat from President Trump\u2019s FCC chair<\/a>. Days after Kirk\u2019s murder, Kimmel remarked on the political affiliation of the killer. \u201cWe hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them,\u201d the host said on the show, \u201cand doing everything they can to score political points from it\u201d.<\/p>\n The decision to pull Kimmel was met with immediate backlash. An\u00a0open letter published from the ACLU<\/a>\u00a0and signed by over 400 figures across the entertainment industry pushed back against \u201cgovernment threats to our freedom of speech.\u201d \u201cIn an attempt to silence its critics, our government has resorted to threatening the livelihoods of journalists, talk show hosts, artists, creatives, and entertainers across the board,\u201d the letter read. \u201cThis runs counter to the values our nation was built upon, and our Constitution guarantees.\u201d<\/p>\n Among the celebrities who signed in solidarity\u00a0were Robert De Niro, Jane Fonda, Selena Gomez, Tom Hanks, Olivia Rodrigo, Ben Stiller, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jennifer Aniston, Jason Bateman, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Michael Keaton, Regina King, Diego Luna, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Natalie Portman, Maya Rudolph, Martin Short, and Kerry Washington.<\/p>\n In a statement Monday, Disney said its decision to suspend production of Kimmel\u2019s show from ABC was made \u201cto avoid further inflaming a tense situation at an emotional moment for our country.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cIt is a decision we made because we felt some of the comments were ill-timed and thus insensitive,\u201d the statement continued. \u201cWe have spent the last days having thoughtful conversations with Jimmy, and after those conversations, we reached the decision to return the show on Tuesday.\u201d<\/p>\n Best of Rolling Stone<\/strong><\/p>\n Sign up for RollingStone’s Newsletter<\/a>.
