The popular alt-rock band Garbage <\/a>has elaborated on the reasons behind their decision to stop touring extensively in North America. <\/p>\n During the band\u2019s tour stop at the Anthem in Washington, DC, last Wednesday, lead singer Shirley Manson attributed the decision to the \u201cthievery\u201d of the recording industry. <\/p>\n \u201cWe have as a band decided that, due to basically the economics of the music industry, that we have to curtail our headline touring business,\u201d the singer said to the crowd. \u201cIt has, thanks to the thievery of the record industry, made touring very, very difficult.\u201d<\/p>\n Manson went on to say that while the economics of touring on a massive scale have become \u201cuntenable,\u201d it\u2019s a \u201cfantastic privilege\u201d to be on this current tour, as Garbage doubts they will \u201cdo a tour of this size again.\u201d <\/p>\n The singer went on to express her concern for younger artists who often have to go above and beyond just to make ends meet on the road. See video of her speech here. <\/a><\/p>\n \u201cI bring this up only because my concern is of course for young musicians who go out there and tour, they\u2019re holding down jobs, they take two weeks off their work and they go around the country,\u201d said Manson \u201cSometimes they\u2019re sleeping in their van, sometimes they\u2019re staying in really, really dodgy so-called motels and it\u2019s dangerous and it\u2019s really unacceptable and it really has to stop. Whatever\u2019s going on, it really has to stop. It\u2019s unsafe and it\u2019s unacceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n In concluding the impromptu speech, Manson saluted the crowd for their support, even through the many challenges the band continues to face. <\/p>\n \u201cAt times in the music industry, they\u2019ve told us we\u2019re old, we\u2019re over, nobody\u2019s interested, nobody gives a f—, nobody wants to play us on radio, nobody wants to interview us,\u201d Manson said. \u201cAnd then you lot came along. You were like, \u2018get behind us, Satan\u2019.
