The second season of NBC\u2019s medical drama \u201cBrilliant Minds<\/a>\u201d kicked off Monday with what series star Zachary Quinto<\/a> describes as a \u201cmystery bomb,\u201d with his character, Dr. Oliver Wolf, under close supervision in a mental institution.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a pretty revolutionary perspective that we come in with: we don\u2019t know how he got there or why he\u2019s there, and we don\u2019t know why he can\u2019t leave,\u201d Quinto told celebrity.land in an interview. As it turns out, Dr. Wolf\u2019s appearance in the facility is a flash-forward, with each of the new episodes rewinding the action six months to offer \u201cbreadcrumbs that lead to what I hope will be a satisfying [end],\u201d he added. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cBrilliant Minds,\u201d which premiered last year, is based on the life of Dr. Oliver Sacks<\/a>, the British neurologist and author known to a generation as the \u201cpoet laureate of contemporary medicine,\u201d in the words<\/a> of The New York Times.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Sacks died<\/a> in 2015 at age 82, having spent most of his life both closeted<\/a> and celibate. Quinto, however, portrays Dr. Wolf as a gay man who makes no secret of his sexuality among his cohorts at New York\u2019s Bronx General Hospital, but grapples with a deep-rooted fear of intimacy that may be connected to his experiences with prosopagnosia<\/a>, or face blindness, and from having grown up with an absent father. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Like Sacks, Dr. Wolf has a close confidante in Dr. Carol Pierce (Tamberla Perry), a character based on Dr. Carol E. Burnett<\/a>, the first Black graduate and one of the first women to graduate from New York\u2019s Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 1960. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Written and created by Michael Grassi, \u201cBrilliant Minds\u201d didn\u2019t enjoy the out-of-the-gate success of HBO\u2019s \u201cThe Pitt.<\/a>\u201d Still, the show\u2019s premiere season received widespread acclaim<\/a>, particularly for Quinto\u2019s performance and a nuanced take on mental health. Its two-episode finale was especially riveting, with Dr. Wolf having an unexpected reunion<\/a> with his father, Noah (Mandy Patinkin<\/a> of \u201cChicago Hope\u201d), who had long been presumed dead.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Another buzzy plot point was Dr. Wolf\u2019s romance with his colleague and onetime adversary, Dr. Josh Nichols (played by Teddy Sears<\/a>). After weeks of slow-building tension, the two men hooked up after being shaken<\/a> by a tragedy halfway through Season 1. By the start of Season 2, however, their relationship has cooled<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cSomeone once said to me, \u2018Once you see a happy couple on TV, that\u2019s where you know it can\u2019t last,\u2019\u201d quipped Sears, who previously co-starred with Quinto on \u201cAmerican Horror Story<\/a>\u201d in 2011. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of love there, but there\u2019s also a lot of reality to deal with.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Dr. Nichols, he added, will spend future episodes \u201cattempting to understand Wolf reconciling with his father, to give him the space and time he needs. But he also wants to know how he figures into Wolf\u2019s life. There\u2019s only a certain amount of time he\u2019s willing to allow Wolf that emotional grace. Ultimately these two still have to work together.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Season 2\u2019s premiere episode, titled \u201cThe Phantom Hook,\u201d finds the series veering further away from the specifics of Sacks\u2019 life, with Dr. Wolf at odds with a new neurology resident, Dr. Charlie Porter (Brian Altemus<\/a>), while treating a champion boxer unable to control his own arm. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Sacks was, of course, already the subject of a more straightforward biopic, 1990\u2019s \u201cAwakenings<\/a>\u201d starring Robin Williams<\/a>. For his part, Quinto likens his work on the show to \u201cexcavating a quarry with a spoon\u201d while remaining true to the essence of the late medical pioneer.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI\u2019m grateful I had time before we started the first season to dive into Sacks\u2019 writing, the many interviews he gave and the articles he wrote,\u201d he said. \u201cI feel like I laid a strong foundation for myself to understand who [Sacks] was. It was a great springboard, and now we\u2019re swimming in the deep water, because this is its own story.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
