Maybe it\u2019s just me, but I have a strong aversion to these sensationalized true-crime stories. I\u2019ve truly never once pressed play thinking, <em data-node-id=\"2.10\">I\u2019m so glad I took the time to reconsider this horrible murderer in a new light. <\/em>Remember when <em data-node-id=\"2.12\">The Office\u2019s<\/em> simple, will-they-won\u2019t-they workplace romance was all we needed to feel fulfilled by TV? If only I could watch Jim propose to Pam at a gas station with new eyes!<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"3\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Sadly, it&#8217;s not so simple nowadays. As veteran entertainment journalist Anthony Breznican <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.esquire.com\/entertainment\/tv\/a66101861\/emmy-awards-2025-recap\/\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.esquire.com\/entertainment\/tv\/a66101861\/emmy-awards-2025-recap\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"pointed out\" data-node-id=\"3.1\" class=\"body-link css-144f60g emevuu60\">pointed out<\/a> the morning after the 2025 Emmy Awards last weekend, America can\u2019t get enough of shows about \u201cmonsters of varying degrees and depths of depravity.\u201d <em data-node-id=\"3.3\">Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story<\/em>\u2014there\u2019s Murphy again\u2014was nominated for eleven Emmys. Then, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.esquire.com\/entertainment\/tv\/a64300764\/adolescence-what-men-should-learn\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.esquire.com\/entertainment\/tv\/a64300764\/adolescence-what-men-should-learn\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Adolescence\u2019s dark story\" data-node-id=\"3.5\" class=\"body-link css-144f60g emevuu60\"><em data-node-id=\"3.5.0\">Adolescence<\/em>\u2019s dark story<\/a> about a thirteen-year-old who murders one of his classmates swept the limited series category with six major wins. Viewers seem to crave a little blood before bed\u2014a scary thought, I know. Hell, I just want to end the night feeling a little better after whatever chaos kicked me down throughout the day. That\u2019s why I had a better time watching another awards show: The Ohio Journalism Awards.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"4\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">The fictional ceremony from <em data-node-id=\"4.1\">The Paper <\/em>took place in the season finale of <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.esquire.com\/entertainment\/tv\/a65982545\/the-paper-the-office-spin-off-connection\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.esquire.com\/entertainment\/tv\/a65982545\/the-paper-the-office-spin-off-connection\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Peacock\u2019s The Office spin-off\" data-node-id=\"4.3\" class=\"body-link css-144f60g emevuu60\">Peacock\u2019s <em data-node-id=\"4.3.1\">The Office <\/em>spin-off<\/a>, which follows <em data-node-id=\"4.5\">The<\/em> <em data-node-id=\"4.7\">Toledo Truth-Teller <\/em>crew as they seek to restore the newspaper\u2019s journalistic integrity. If you missed it, NBC announced that the network will air the series on linear cable channels this November. (Though be warned, I\u2019m about to discuss the finale here).<\/p>\n<section data-embed=\"recirculation\" data-lazy-id=\"P0-15\" data-node-id=\"5\" class=\"embed\"\/>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"6\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\"><em data-node-id=\"6.0\">The Truth-Teller <\/em>ends the finale by bringing home the ceremony\u2019s most prestigious award for Outstanding Print Coverage. Mare Pritti (Chelsea Frei) wins an award for her investigative story that uncovers the city\u2019s sewage problem earlier in the season. Plus, Oscar Nu\u00f1ez\u2014who reprises his <em data-node-id=\"6.2\">Office <\/em>role as Oscar Martinez\u2014wins for a new puzzle he designs in the paper\u2019s games section. In fact, I\u2019d like to prematurely submit Sabrina Impacciatore\u2019s Esmeralda Grand to win every award.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"10\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">The former <em data-node-id=\"10.1\">White Lotus <\/em>star plays the <em data-node-id=\"10.3\">Truth-Teller<\/em>\u2019s interim managing editor and the most Michael Scott-like antagonist in <em data-node-id=\"10.5\">The Paper<\/em>\u2019s office. In one of her funniest moments, episode 5\u2019s \u201cScam Alert,\u201d she spends the half-hour episode childishly refusing to admit that she\u2019s been catfished. We lost Robert Redford, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.esquire.com\/entertainment\/movies\/a66140177\/robert-redford-bono-u2-interview\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.esquire.com\/entertainment\/movies\/a66140177\/robert-redford-bono-u2-interview\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"a light in Hollywood\" data-node-id=\"13.1\" class=\"body-link css-144f60g emevuu60\">a light in Hollywood<\/a> that inspired independent filmmakers to reach the highest honors in the entertainment industry. Viewers also briefly lost another late-night host when ABC pulled Jimmy Kimmel off the air, just because his show holds truth to the people in power. Thankfully, Kimmel will be back on the air this week. But as many other important media institutions lose funding and support in the real world, even fictional wins like <em data-node-id=\"13.3\">The Paper<\/em>\u2019s feel inspiring. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"14\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">That\u2019s precisely what we need on TV: More of Esmeralda Grand making a fool of herself.
