In Ethan Hawke\u2019s new show \u201cThe Lowdown,\u201d he looks increasingly rough the first few episodes, as his face gets cut and bruised.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cYou know, I\u2019m one of those actors who insists that I really get hit,\u201d Hawke, 54, joked to The Post.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo, I\u2019m not the Tom Cruise [type]. I love it because I think it\u2019s funny,\u201d the Oscar-nominated actor <\/a>added. <\/p>\n He cited other \u201cfilm noir\u201d characters, such as Jack Nicholson in \u201cChinatown,\u201d who has a \u201cbandaged nose\u201d the whole movie. \u201cThere\u2019s a long history of, \u2018if you go seeking the truth, you\u2019re going to get punched in the face.’\u201d<\/p>\n Referring to his character in \u201cThe Lowdown,\u201d Lee Raybon, Hawke said, \u201cthat\u2019s just Lee\u2019s job. And so, I found it incredibly funny. I love somebody who\u2019s willing to face danger without playing a tough guy. He\u2019s not a tough guy. He\u2019s just willing to do whatever it takes.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThe Lowdown\u201d was created by Sterlin Harjo (\u201cReservation Dogs\u201d<\/a>), and Hawke exec produces<\/a> and also stars in it.\u00a0<\/p>\n The show premieres Tuesday, Sept 23 on FX (9 p.m.) and airs the next day on Hulu.\u00a0<\/p>\n It follows Lee (Hawke), an eccentric Tulsa man who works in a bookstore when he\u2019s not sleuthing to expose local corruption, or being a father to his 14 year old daughter, Francis (Ryan Kiera Armstrong).\u00a0<\/p>\n Lee gets in hot water when he writes an expose on the powerful Washberg family, including Dale (Tim Blake Nelson), Betty Jo (Jeanne Tripplehorn), and politician Donald (Kyle MacLachlan).\u00a0<\/p>\n Harjo told The Post that he was friendly with Hawke, and originally sent him the script just asking for his opinion.<\/p>\n \u201cI was too afraid to just say, \u2018do you want to play this part?\u2019 Because I feel like I was new to this industry. I don\u2019t know how that work,\u201d he explained to The Post. \u201cBut luckily, he wrote me back and just said, \u2018why am I not playing this character?\u2019 Well, let\u2019s fix that.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n Hawke told The Post that his character, Lee, reminded him of his stepfather.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cI had an amazing stepfather who just didn\u2019t really enjoy the way society works, and was really allergic to the laws of popular culture. And he would be frustrated with how everybody was oriented around making money, as if that was going to get us into heaven, and why we weren\u2019t taking care of our brothers and sisters,\u201d the \u201cFirst Reformed\u201d actor explained.\u00a0<\/p>\n The \u201cBoyhood\u201d star <\/a>added that his stepfather was \u201can inspiring person to be around,\u201d but that his ethics \u201cgot him into a lot of personal drama.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cHe would say the thing you\u2019re not supposed to say, and it was true\u2026Maybe it wasn\u2019t the right time, but when is the right time?\u201d he asked. \u201cUsually never!\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n Lee also reminded him of people he encountered in the arts.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cA lot of idealism and that idealism gets knocked down as soon as people start having children. A lot of dreams die. And, there\u2019s some people that somehow just keep crawling back.
