GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) – Alachua County commissioners met to consider possible new rules for large events in the county. The discussion comes as some residents voice support for a proposed music venue near Melrose while others express opposition.<\/p>\n

Alachua County commissioners reviewed options like temporary use permits, zoning changes, and a special area study. Each of these paths has different timelines, costs, and levels of community input.<\/p>\n

After hearing the presentations, the commissioners took no action, leaving the existing permitting process for large events in place.<\/p>\n

Even though the owners of the WildFlowers Music Park property in Melrose haven\u2019t filed for permits, many say the rules being considered would\u2019ve affected them.<\/p>\n

Supporters believe the venue could bring economic development and new cultural opportunities to the area.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe community has every right to be concerned about the use and what\u2019s going to be going on, is it going to be loud. I\u2019ve experienced another festival similar to this in upstate New York in a rural community, and it was really good for the community,\u201d said Richard Schreff, a resident supporting the proposed venue.<\/p>\n

Opponents argue that a music venue of that size could put too much pressure on rural infrastructure. Residents have raised questions about traffic safety, runoff after events, and noise impacts on nearby homes.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy neighbors will bring up a multitude of reasons as to why they do not support this proposal. I am concerned about the environmental impacts, especially on our water we are all on well systems.\u201d<\/p>\n

County leaders say if a special area plan has been approved, it would take two years to complete and cost about $200,000.<\/p>\n

They add that the proposal isn\u2019t just about the music venue, and the majority of commissioners are weighing against the options discussed. <\/p>\n
