Hootie and the Blowfish frontman Darius Rucker has formed a supergroup, Howl Owl Howl, with R.E.M. bassist Mike Mills and co-founding, former drummer for the Black Crowes, Steve Gorman. Their debut track \u201cMy Cologne\u201d arrives Oct. 31, and they\u2019re kicking off their inaugural tour Nov. 3 at the Vogue in Indianapolis, Indiana.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt feels great to be singing with a rock band again,\u201d Rucker says in a statement. \u201cIt\u2019s like buddies getting together, but also getting to play with your idols. The stuff we\u2019re writing is so different than anything I\u2019ve tried to do before.\u201d<\/p>\n

And we all admire each other musically. All those things come together and if it weren\u2019t fun, we wouldn\u2019t be doing it.\u201d<\/p>\n According to a press release, the group\u2019s music \u201cfuses organic roots rock with an open-minded alternative flair, matching a fluid, feel-oriented rhythm section to the barrel-chested vocal rasp of an iconic frontman.\u201d<\/p>\n The group started with informal jam sessions back in 2021, but it remained a secret until Rucker discussed it with Rolling Stone<\/em>\u2018s Brian Hiatt last summer.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cYou can call it a supergroup if you want, but I think people will really be surprised at how good it is,\u201d Rucker said. \u201cBut we\u2019re just a band. We\u2019re friends, and we jammed together one day at Steve\u2019s kid\u2019s school with [Nashville session player] Tom Bukovac playing guitar. We were just like, \u2018Let\u2019s go in the studio and see what happens.\u2019 And we went in the studio and to be honest with you, magic happened, and then I just can\u2019t wait for the record to get out.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n There\u2019s still no word on when the album will hit, but they\u2019ll definitely be playing songs from it on their tour. Their sets will mix Howl Owl Howl originals with songs by R.E.M., the Black Crowes, and Hootie and the Blowfish.<\/p>\n \u201cThere\u2019s not a single guarantee,\u2019 Gorman says in a statement. \u201cWe\u2019re finally going to get to plug in and let it rip a little bit.\u201d<\/p>\n Rucker is no stranger to the R.E.M. catalog. Hootie and the Blowfish have played \u201cLosing My Religion\u201d at most of their concerts over the past two decades. They\u2019ve also played \u201c(Don\u2019t Go Back to) Rockville,\u201d and \u201cIt\u2019s the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine).\u201d And a handful of times, they\u2019ve also done \u201cShe Talks to Angels\u201d by the Black Crowes.<\/p>\n Hootie and the Blowfish played a special show at the Grand Wailea resort in Maui, Hawaii, on Feb. 26. But they\u2019ve been off the road since last year, and likely won\u2019t be touring again any time soon.<\/p>\n \u201cIt would be five or more years \u2014 if we ever do it again,\u201d he told Rolling Stone <\/em>in the middle of the 2024 tour. \u201cI was surprised I agreed to this tour. Because I mean, for me, it\u2019s just like, I\u2019m going backwards.
