This year, Gavin Stewart and Vanessa Owen<br \/>\n                        of Asheville-based Stewart\/Owen Dance return to choreograph for UNCSA after successfully<br \/>\n                        launching the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uncsa.edu\/news\/20250130-source-dance-intensive.aspx\">S\/OURCE winter dance intensive<\/a> in January. Guest artist Da\u2019Von Doane also returns to premiere a new work, \u201cTabula<br \/>\n                        Rasa,\u201d with music by Arvo P\u00e4rt. New works by faculty member\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uncsa.edu\/faculty-staff\/fernando-carrillo.aspx\">Fernando Carrillo<\/a> and alumnae Adrienne Westwood (B.F.A. \u201903) and Kate Jewett (B.F.A. \u201905) round out<br \/>\n                        the program.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Performances will take place Tuesday through Saturday, Sept. 23-27, at 7:30 p.m.,<br \/>\n                        and at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 27. All performances will take place in Agnes de<br \/>\n                        Mille Theatre, located on the UNCSA campus, 1533 South Main St.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uncsa.edu\/performances\/events\/20250927-big-band.aspx\"><strong>UNCSA Jazz Ensemble: Big Band!<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 Sept. 27<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uncsa.edu\/music\/index.aspx\">School of Music<\/a> performances continue with the\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uncsa.edu\/performances\/events\/20250927-big-band.aspx\">Big Band-themed concert<\/a>\u00a0featuring the UNCSA Jazz Ensemble under the direction of <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uncsa.edu\/faculty-staff\/steve-alford.aspx\">Steve Alford<\/a>, assistant dean of Recruitment and Enrollment for Improvised Music and Jazz. The<br \/>\n                        concert will feature timeless classics, including the sounds of Duke Ellington, Count<br \/>\n                        Basie, Bill Holcombe and Stan Kenton, along with other high-energy pieces from the<br \/>\n                        genre.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The concert takes place on Saturday, Sept. 27, at 7:30 p.m. at the Freedman Theatre<br \/>\n                        on the UNCSA campus, 1533 South Main St.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/uncsa.my.salesforce-sites.com\/ticket\/#\/instances\/a0FU100000LPxdVMAT\"><strong>Sampling as Storytelling: De La Soul and the Legal Limits of Creativity<\/strong><\/a><strong> <\/strong>\u2013 Oct. 10<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uncsa.edu\/filmmaking\/\">School of Filmmaking<\/a> will continue its <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uncsa.edu\/filmmaking\/symposium.aspx\">Symposium series<\/a> with a talk by law scholar Enriche Armijo on the landmark 1991 sampling lawsuit between<br \/>\n                        De La Soul and The Turtles and its impact on music rights. The discussion will trace<br \/>\n                        the legal and cultural implications of the case through to De La Soul\u2019s 2021 battle<br \/>\n                        over music ownership and distribution. Topics will include music sample clearances<br \/>\n                        for streaming platforms, the legal limits of creativity and the inventive Ethos of<br \/>\n                        Hip-Hop.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The presentation is free to attend, and will take place on Friday, October 10, at<br \/>\n                        2:30 p.m. in the ACE Exhibition Complex on the UNCSA campus, 1533 South Main St.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uncsa.edu\/performances\/events\/20251023-choir-boy.aspx\"><strong>Choir Boy<\/strong><\/a><strong> <\/strong>\u2013 Oct. 23- Nov. 1<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uncsa.edu\/drama\/index.aspx\">School of Drama<\/a> opens its season in October with \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uncsa.edu\/performances\/events\/20251023-choir-boy.aspx\">Choir Boy<\/a>,\u201d directed by faculty member <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uncsa.edu\/faculty-staff\/cliff-odle.aspx\">Cliff Odle<\/a>. From Oscar-winning playwright Tarell Alvin McCraney, this coming-of-age story follows<br \/>\n                        Pharus, a gifted student at an elite all-boys prep school determined to lead the school\u2019s<br \/>\n                        renowned choir. With moving performances and an unforgettable finale, the production<br \/>\n                        celebrates identity, resilience and the power of music to lift us all.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The show blends gospel and R&amp;B in an entirely a cappella score, performed by student<br \/>\n                        singers from the School of Music and School of Drama. Audiences can expect well-known<br \/>\n                        spirituals such as \u201cMotherless Child\u201d and \u201cEyes on the Prize,\u201d alongside R&amp;B ballads<br \/>\n                        popularized by New Edition and L.T.D. He wrote:<br \/>\n                        \u201cThis is Fate, that inexorable force that prevents our aspirations to happiness from<br \/>\n                        reaching their goal, that jealously ensures our well-being and peace are not unclouded,<br \/>\n                        that hangs over our heads like the sword of Damocles&#8230;.\u201d He dedicated this work to<br \/>\n                        his mysterious patroness, whom he described as \u201cmy best friend.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span>The Symphony Orchestra will also premiere a new work by faculty composer Lawrence<br \/>\n                           Dillon, \u201cVanishing,\u201dwhich adds a contemporary voice to the program. The short symphony<br \/>\n                           unfolds in two movements, \u201cPresence\u201d and \u201cUnselfing.\u201d The opening is colorful and<br \/>\n                           engaging, while the second movement turns austere and reflective. Inspired by philosopher<br \/>\n                           Iris Murdoch\u2019s concept of unselfing, the piece invites listeners to set aside life\u2019s<br \/>\n                           petty cares and trivial concerns in order to experience beauty more fully.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span>The performance will take place Tuesday, Oct. 14, at 7:30 p.m. in Brendle Recital<br \/>\n                           Hall on the Wake Forest University campus, 1775 Wake Forest Road in Winston-Salem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>UNCSA Fall Chamber Music Festival<\/strong> \u2013 Oct. 18-25, 2025<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The UNCSA Chamber Music Festival, led by artistic directors and faculty members <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uncsa.edu\/faculty-staff\/ida-bieler.aspx\">Ida Bieler<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uncsa.edu\/faculty-staff\/dmitri-shteinberg.aspx\">Dmitri Vorobiev<\/a>, returns for its fifth season with a fall installment showcasing students, faculty<br \/>\n                        and guest artists. Featured guest performers include violinist Ilya Kaler, bassoonist<br \/>\n                        Marcelo Padilla and cellist Edward Arron.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The program is highlighted by Sergei Taneyev\u2019s Piano Quintet, a rarely performed and<br \/>\n                        technically demanding work. Vorobiev will perform the piece alongside students, faculty<br \/>\n                        and guest artists.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Performances will take place Saturday, Oct. 18; Tuesday, Oct. 21; and Saturday, Oct.<br \/>\n                        25, at 7:30 p.m. in Watson Hall, 1533 South Main Street in Winston-Salem. A livestream option is also available with<br \/>\n                        registration.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uncsa.edu\/performances\/events\/20251024-inter-alia.aspx\"><strong>Inter Alia, North Carolina Forests<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 Oct. 24<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The UNCSA Symphony Orchestra and the Wake Forest University Symphony Orchestra will<br \/>\n                        perform together in a free side-by-side concert. Conducted by Wake Forest\u2019s J. Aaron<br \/>\n                        Hardwick, the program features Jean Sibelius\u2019 radiant Symphony No. 3 in C major and<br \/>\n                        the world premiere of \u201cInter Alia,\u201d a new work for soprano and orchestra by composer<br \/>\n                        David Kirkland Garner.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Based on a poem of the same name by Ishion Hutchinson, a 2023 T.S. Eliot Prize finalist,<br \/>\n                        the piece explores tree species native to Western North Carolina, including those<br \/>\n                        found on the campus of Wake <span>Forest<\/span>. The performance<br \/>\n                        will feature the Jonathan Scales Fourchestra, a trio blending jazz, classical, and<br \/>\n                        progressive rock with Latin rhythms and funk.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Fourchestra includes Jonathan Scales on steel pans, E\u2019Lon JD on electric bass<br \/>\n                        and Maison Guidry on drums. The group has appeared on club and festival stages across<br \/>\n                        North America and Europe, toured internationally as a U.S. Department of State Cultural<br \/>\n                        Ambassador and performed on an NPR Tiny Desk Concert with B\u00e9la Fleck.
