Actor and philanthropist Idris Elba is \u201can optimist\u201d about AI in entertainment, he said in an interview recorded for Semafor\u2019s Next 3 Billion summit.<\/p>\n
Elba told Semafor Media Editor Max Tani that he\u2019s enthusiastic about \u201cthe opportunities for underdeveloped communities to catch up with the rest of the world because AI can help them do that. That\u2019s exciting to me. That\u2019s progress.\u201d<\/p>\n
There is a contentious debate about AI in Hollywood. The issue was central to actors\u2019 and writers\u2019 strikes in 2023, and mirrors the broader discourse around the AI boom: While some are worried about the technology\u2019s impact on jobs and creativity at large, others see it as a useful tool to unlock new possibilities in movies and TV shows.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen the synthesizer was created and it had drum kits on it, it didn\u2019t stop drummers becoming drummers. It\u2019s just a different tool set,\u201d said Elba, who is also a DJ on the side. \u201cWe went from pin cameras to digital cameras \u2014 hasn\u2019t changed photography in any way. A picture is a picture.\u201d<\/p>\n
Still, he said, \u201cAI isn\u2019t going to come up with solutions that human beings can\u2019t think of,\u201d but it can be useful in \u201chelping people help each other better.\u201d<\/p>\n
Elba also said AI can be useful in conceptualizing and building brick-and-mortar infrastructure in underdeveloped communities. His charity, the Elba Hope Foundation, is working to build projects like renewable energy grids in Sierra Leone, Ghana, the UK, and US.<\/p>\n
That has implications for the entertainment economy, too: Elba hopes to build more studios in Africa to bolster film and TV production there, but acknowledged that it was a \u201cslow process.\u201d \u201cWhen you say you\u2019re building studios, people want to see shiny buildings very quickly. But for me, there\u2019s a lot of foundational work\u201d that needs to happen first.<\/p>\n
Addressing the impact of US funding cuts to philanthropic groups, Elba said such cuts were \u201cinevitable\u201d but that it has \u201cforced leadership to\u2026 figure out how to self-generate.\u201d<\/p>\n
He said there were opportunities for communities to build systems that are not dependent on aid: \u201cI think that there are many opportunities for developing countries that are used to the aid model to think about this differently.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
