Last month, Garbage<\/a> revealed that their fall North American tour would be their final full-scale stateside outing<\/a>, but didn\u2019t delve into any details behind the decision. In an onstage speech during the band\u2019s recent show in Washington, D.C., singer Shirley Manson<\/a> blamed \u201cthe thievery of the record industry\u201d as the reason why they will stop touring the continent.<\/p>\n

The current North American \u201cHappy Endings\u201d tour<\/a> kicked off on September 3rd in Orlando, and is scheduled through a November 14th show at the Corona Capital fest in Mexico City, with tickets available here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

From the stage at The Anthem in D.C., Manson told the crowd (as transcribed by Louder<\/a>), \u201cWe have as a band decided that, due to basically the economics of the music industry, that we have to curtail our headline touring business. It has, thanks to the thievery of the record industry, made touring very, very difficult.\u201d<\/p>\n

She continued, \u201cWe\u2019re not complaining, we\u2019ve had a fucking great run. I bring this up only because my concern is, of course, for young musicians who go out there and tour. They\u2019re holding down jobs, they take two weeks off work, and they go around the country. Sometimes they\u2019re sleeping in their van, sometimes they\u2019re staying in really, really dodgy so-called motels, and it\u2019s dangerous. It\u2019s really unacceptable and it really has to stop. Whatever\u2019s going on, it really has to stop. It\u2019s unsafe and it\u2019s unacceptable..\u201d<\/p>\n

Manson went on to say, \u201cSo we have just decided that the economics have become untenable, so this is kind of the last time that we\u2019ve decided we\u2019re going to get on a bus and just tour all over North America,\u201d she continues. \u201cIt\u2019s a fantastic privilege and it\u2019s so beautiful and exciting and amazing. And all the more so because I doubt that we\u2019ll do a tour this size ever again.\u201d<\/p>\n

She wrapped up her speech by expressing appreciation toward the band\u2019s loyal fans, saying, \u201cWe all feel that we\u2019ve been so immensely privileged and we\u2019ve enjoyed unbelievable support from our fans, from you. At times in the music industry, they\u2019ve told us we\u2019re old, we\u2019re over, nobody\u2019s interested, nobody gives a fuck, nobody wants to play us on radio, nobody wants to interview us. And then you lot came along. You were like, \u2018get behind us, Satan.\u2019 And we won\u2019t forget it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Garbage formed in 1993, and still feature original members Manson, Butch Vig, Steve Marker, and Duke Erikson, along with new touring bassist Nicole Fiorentino. The band released its latest album, Let All That We Imagine Be the Light, in May of this year.<\/p>\n
