OSCEOLA, Ark. (KAIT) – The Osceola City Council rejected a proposal to bring an entertainment district to the city.<\/p>\n
Osceola Mayor Joe Harris Jr. said bringing an entertainment district to downtown Osceola has been a project in the works. <\/p>\n
\u201cThey just want to loosen up and sit outside and maybe have a beer or whatever, but they are only confined to a small area there,\u201d Harris explained. \u201cWe want to try some of the things other cities have tried and been very successful.\u201d<\/p>\n
But at the last city council meeting on Monday, Sept. 22, the idea was rejected. <\/p>\n
Harris said it\u2019s not clear why some members voted no.<\/p>\n
\u201cI want to talk with all the council members individually, and if they have a problem with it, let\u2019s try and fix that problem together to make sure that Osceola can get what it deserves from all of its people, and all of its people can get what it deserve from the city of Osceola,\u201d said Harris. <\/p>\n
As for the residents, not everyone seemed to be against the idea.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m for it because we need more things to do down here in Osceola,\u201d resident Mercedes Smith said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe need it,\u201d resident Chatney Campbell said.<\/p>\n
\u201cHaving that entertainment would actually, it would bring a larger crowd, and with that larger crowd, it would bring business for the community,\u201d said resident Marcus Alfred.<\/p>\n
But even though Alfred likes the idea, he still has a few concerns.<\/p>\n
\u201cNow, the downfall, it might be a little ticked up in the crime, but we have to look at that\u2019s why we have the police force to take care of that,\u201d said Alfred.<\/p>\n
Harris added that he would be fine with whatever way the entertainment district goes; he wants to hear from everyone on whether it\u2019s a good or bad idea.<\/p>\n
