He was 87.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">His death, at a skilled nursing facility, was confirmed by Jane Tyska, a friend and fellow photojournalist who was his caretaker.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A wry, low-key New Yorker, Mr. Stevens moved naturally \u2014 sometimes seemingly invisibly \u2014 in elite rock circles, which helped him capture intimate portraits of stars at unguarded moments backstage, in hotel rooms or in smoky nightclubs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cAt some post-gig party or music business reception, you would suddenly realize that Joe had been tucked away behind a pillar for most of the occasion, steadfastly snapping away,\u201d Chris Salewicz, a prominent rock journalist and author, said in an email.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Salewicz worked with Mr. Stevens at the British music bible New Musical Express, where Mr. Stevens spent much of the 1970s as a staff photographer after moving to London early in the decade.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI wasn\u2019t intimidated by stardom,\u201d Mr. Stevens said <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/features\/article\/6556-picture-this\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">in a 2007 interview<\/a> with the music site Pitchfork. \u201cI\u2019d already been around all the big shots. And I saw that they were just like you and I, no big deal. They just happened to be unbelievable sometimes when they get onstage or make a record. The rest of the time, boring, like the rest of us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Stevens broke the halo of stardom with shots of, for example, Paul McCartney wearily burying his head in the arms of his wife, Linda, during a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/americansongwriter.com\/on-this-day-in-1972-paul-mccartney-and-his-wife-were-arrested-during-their-wings-tour\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">pot bust<\/a> in Sweden in 1972 and Rod Stewart seeming stage-ready while exiting the men\u2019s room at a New York nightclub.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Other memorable images included John Lennon and Yoko Ono looking like humble street protesters at a 1971 demonstration and Mr. Stevens\u2019s friend David Bowie, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/artanddesign\/2015\/jan\/29\/my-best-shot-david-bowie-joe-stevens\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">visibly exhausted<\/a> and chatting with a railway porter in Paris in 1973 after a grueling boat and train journey from Japan. (He was afraid of flying.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">When punk rock swept London in the mid-1970s, Mr. Stevens became a leading chronicler of the scene. His first encounter with the music of anarchy came through the Sex Pistols\u2019 manager, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/04\/09\/arts\/music\/09mclaren.html\" title=\"\">Malcolm McLaren<\/a>, whom he knew only as the proprietor, with the designer <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/12\/29\/fashion\/vivienne-westwood-dead.html\" title=\"\">Vivienne Westwood<\/a>, of a fetish wear shop called Sex.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cOne day, McLaren came barreling into my flat with these fliers that said \u2018Sex Pistols \u2014 Live at Logan\u2019s Loft,\u2019\u201d he recalled in a 2014 <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.seacoastonline.com\/story\/entertainment\/local\/2014\/09\/11\/photographer-joe-stevens-shares-sex\/36445889007\/?gnt-cfr=1&amp;gca-cat=p&amp;gca-uir=true&amp;gca-epti=z115603e001300v115603b0063xxd006365&amp;gca-ft=131&amp;gca-ds=sophi\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">interview<\/a> published on Seacoast Online, a New Hampshire news site.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI had no idea it was a band,\u201d he added. \u201cI thought maybe it was a vibrator show. You know, like a Tupperware party.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Soon enough, Mr. Stevens became a fixture in punk circles, and in 1978 he was there for the only American tour the Sex Pistols made during their heyday, a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/music\/concerts\/sex-pistols-u-s-tour-history-1978-1235080219\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">brief and chaotic run<\/a> largely focused on honky-tonk bars in the South.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Not long after, he moved back to New York, where he photographed the Ramones, Blondie and others in the orbit of CBGB, the Bowery club that served as a punk epicenter. He found punk a visually striking alternative to the glam-rock clich\u00e9s of the early \u201970s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI was bored with the platform shoes and choreographed shows,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Joseph Stevens Grady was born on July 25, 1938, in the Bronx, to Joseph Clifford Grady, an art appraiser and boxing coach, and Anne (McPhilips) Grady. His parents divorced when he was 5, and he was raised primarily by his mother in Queens.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe lived in basements,\u201d he told Pitchfork. \u201cShe was a waitress, she raised me on tips.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">He gravitated toward Greenwich Village in his early 20s and eventually managed a coffeehouse there called the Playhouse, where he mingled with local folk singers like <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1976\/04\/10\/archives\/phil-ochs-a-suicide-at-35-singer-of-peace-movement.html\" title=\"\">Phil Ochs<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2001\/07\/11\/arts\/fred-neil-folk-singer-and-composer-64.html\" title=\"\">Fred Neil<\/a> and John Sebastian, who would later hire him to hoist amplifiers and organize expenses for his band, the Lovin\u2019 Spoonful.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">During an extended stay in Los Angeles, Mr. Stevens hung out with bands like the Byrds, who asked him to serve as their road manager. He later worked in the same capacity for <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/11\/10\/world\/africa\/10iht-obits.1.17682273.html\" title=\"\">Miriam Makeba<\/a>, the South African singer and activist.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-6\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">During tours, he began to envy the photographer <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/11\/14\/arts\/music\/henry-diltz.html\" title=\"\">Henry Diltz<\/a>, an occasional roommate, who would drop off his film canisters at the end of the day and head to the bar.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI said, \u2018Wow, that\u2019s a good gig!\u2019\u201d Mr. Stevens told Pitchfork. \u201cI had all the headaches, people getting busted, girlfriends, diseases. I had to worry about all that stuff. And he\u2019d just sort of say, \u2018I hope there\u2019s some nice girls downstairs.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Stevens had been snapping musicians as a hobby since his Playhouse days, and in the summer of 1969 he headed off with three Leica cameras to Woodstock.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Once there, he ran across from <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/03\/25\/arts\/music\/25marshall.html\" title=\"\">Jim Marshall<\/a>, a top rock photographer he knew from his cafe, and talked him into wrangling a press pass for him. \u201cThat gave me my life,\u201d Mr. Stevens said <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=_vx8YnGDzss\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">in a 2012 video interview<\/a>. \u201cI\u2019ve been doing photography ever since.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Initially, Mr. Stevens took a standard photojournalist route, starting with a staff job at The East Village Other, an influential underground newspaper, covering the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/10\/16\/movies\/chicago-7-trial.html\" title=\"\">Chicago Seven<\/a> trial, Black Panther rallies and women\u2019s rights marches.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">After moving to England, he worked for another alternative newspaper, International Times. While covering the sectarian violence known as the Troubles in Northern Ireland in 1971, he was jailed on <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1971\/05\/30\/archives\/a-us-journalist-in-jail-in-belfast-to-face-trial-soon.html\" title=\"\">arson charges<\/a> after authorities captured him fleeing the scene of a firebombing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-7\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">He was <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1971\/07\/02\/archives\/new-yorker-is-released-after-belfast-arson-trial.html\" title=\"\">acquitted<\/a> after a three-month trial, but he concluded that cadging backstage passes was preferable to dodging bullets, so he veered into the field where he would be a standout through the 1980s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">By the end of that decade, he had grown weary of the rock grind and opted for a quieter life in Portsmouth, N.H., where he worked as a bartender, took up sailing and occasionally took photos for local newspapers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Stevens was married and divorced twice. He leaves no immediate survivors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Though he spent decades in the midst of rock\u2019s endless mutations, Mr. Stevens also kept a healthy remove.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI wasn\u2019t a punk myself,\u201d he said. \u201cI wasn\u2019t a beatnik, I wasn\u2019t a hippie, a rock \u2019n\u2019 roller \u2014 none of that. But I shot all those scenes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI wasn\u2019t a follower.
