When The Partridge Family debuted on ABC 55 years ago, the made-for-TV band was introduced by a music legend. In the pilot episode titled\u00a0\u201cWhat? Get Out of Show Business?,\u201d which aired Sept. 25, 1970, \u00a0legendary musician Johnny Cash<\/strong> introduced the family at their first-ever gig with mom Shirley (Shirley Jones<\/strong>) as a bandmate\u2014at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, no less.<\/p>\n \u201cLadies and Gentlemen, America\u2019s latest success story, The Partridge Family,\u201d Cash said in the surprise cameo<\/a>, before turning his head toward the stage.<\/p>\n The camera then cut to\u00a0David Cassidy, Susan Dey, Danny Bonaduce,<\/strong> and the rest of the Partridges, all dressed in matching purple suits and paralyzed with stage fright. The family matriarch had to snap them out of it, and soon they were singing their breakout tune, \u201cTogether (Havin\u2019 a Ball).\u201d<\/p>\n Fifty-five years later, Cash\u2019s cameo on the sitcom is still talked about online. In a post to X<\/a>, Bonaduce\u2019s wife Amy shared a photo of a Johnny Cash album and wrote, \u201cFun fact: Johnny Cash was in the pilot episode of The Partridge Family\u2026. Cash introduced the group\u2019s performance of ‘Together (Havin\u2019 a Ball),’\u201d a blurb on the website teases.<\/p>\n In a\u00a01997 interview with Playboy<\/a>, Cash revealed that he was open to unusual appearances because he liked to surprise his fans. \u201cI never wanted to be boxed in. If it looked fun, and it felt honest, I\u2019d do it,” he said.<\/p>\n He may have had a soft spot for The Partridge Family, given his famous wife\u2019s musical history. Speaking with The Fresh Air podcast<\/a> in 1997, Cash also reflected on the importance of families who sing together.<\/p>\n \u201cWell, there\u2019s something about families singing together that is just better than any other groups you can pick up or make, you know,\u201d he said. \u201cIf it\u2019s family, if it\u2019s blood-on-blood, then it\u2019s gonna be, it\u2019s gonna be better. The voices, singing their parts, are going to be tighter and they\u2019re going to be more on pitch.
