That was the question on the minds of concerned fans and casual onlookers alike this year after a series of <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/bet-awards-2025-ultimate-icon-recipients-mariah-carey-1235349331\/\">middling public appearances<\/a> and shows that saw the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/mariah-carey-video-vanguard-award-2025-vmas-1235421446\/\">normally-engaged singer<\/a> looking uncharacteristically downcast and detached.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tOn her long-awaited 16th studio album, <em>Here for It All<\/em>, Carey doesn\u2019t definitively answer the question, with 11 tracks that mostly play it safe and stay in her pocket, though there\u2019s no denying her voice is still intact.\u00a0Compared to 2018\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-album-reviews\/review-mariah-carey-stays-current-without-losing-her-charm-on-caution-757639\/\">well-received <em>Caution<\/em><\/a>, which put Carey at the pinnacle of contemporary R&amp;B, <em>Here for It All<\/em> leans into a decidedly retro vibe, with soulful ballads reminiscent of Motown greats and uptempo tracks that draw from disco and funk. Even lead single, \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/mariah-carey-type-dangerous-single-1235357427\/\">Type Dangerous<\/a>,\u201d sampled Eric B. and Rakim\u2019s \u201cEric B. Is President\u201d\u2026 from 1986.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tCarey is as pitch-perfect and lyrically-assured as ever, even if her heart may not be fully into it. The singer has had a difficult few years, with the passing of her mother and sister <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/mariah-carey-mother-sister-died-same-day-1235088535\/\">just hours apart<\/a>, followed by a copyright lawsuit over \u201cAll I Want for Christmas Is You\u201d (that was <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/lawsuit-mariah-carey-all-i-want-for-christmas-is-you-1235300092\/\">ultimately dismissed<\/a>), and well, being the mother of <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/music\/music-news\/mariah-carey-embarrasses-son-twitch-livestream-cameo-1235939959\/\" target=\"_blank\">precocious teenage twins<\/a>. If she\u2019s been feeling a little unsettled lately, can you really blame her?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe singer seemingly addresses the chatter on the song \u201cNothing Is Impossible,\u201d which is another gem in her catalog of self-empowerment anthems. \u201cGone for a while but I\u2019m much better\/Covering my eyes was so unpleasant\/Ain\u2019t gonna lie, it wasn\u2019t very nice,\u201d she sings, before declaring that, \u201cI knew deep down inside that I could fly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cMy Love\u201d is a stirring cover of the Paul McCartney and Wings classic, and Carey plays it straight and steers clear of the histrionics in favor of a more honest, tender delivery. You can almost picture Carey kicking off her heels and gabbing it up with patrons on the bluesy \u201cIn Your Feelings,\u201d which plays like a sequel to last year\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vibe.com\/music\/music-news\/mariah-carey-tiktok-challenge-its-a-wrap-1234731971\/\" target=\"_blank\">viral hit, \u201cIt\u2019s a Wrap.\u201d<\/a> The live instrumentation and stream-of-consciousness lyrics sink into an old-timey 6\/8 beat as the singer scats, \u201cI think you might be getting a little bit too in your feelings. Why do we feel so estranged?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe Clark Sisters join her for the spirited \u201cJesus I Do,\u201d which could\u2019ve easily been a Stephanie Mills cover, with a rollicking bass line and rousing gospel chorus fit for a revival. And Carey subs in for Bruno Mars on the Silk Sonic-esque \u201cPlay This Song\u201d with Anderson .Paak, though it\u2019s neither as memorable or playful as advertised.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe singer fairs better on \u201cI Won\u2019t Allow It,\u201d which rides a disco-funk groove as she dares a paramour (or rival?) to try upstaging her again. Carey\u2019s pen is in fine form on the track, working an unlikely brand shout-out into one of her cheekiest disses to date: \u201cSo whatchu gonna do when your face all broke\u2026 can\u2019t obtain any accutane? If some are questioning whether Carey still wants to perform, the album declares that she\u2019s tired of being <em>performative<\/em>. All of the songs feel like something the accomplished singer-songwriter wrote with old friends \u201cjust for laughs\u201d or \u201cjust for the nostalgia,\u201d as she would say, rather than catering them for the charts. The result is a collection of tracks that feel surprisingly sincere and perhaps the most true to who she is at this point in her life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cHere for It All\u201d proves that Carey\u2019s voice is still present and powerful as ever, but it\u2019s her album and she\u2019ll (only) belt if she wants to. And if she also wants to take an extended break, the music legend has left fans with an album that\u2019s ultimately full of timeless, endearing cuts that can tie them over until this <em>Butterfly<\/em> returns.
