Mae Martin<\/a>\u2018s new Netflix series\u00a0Wayward<\/a><\/em> is a twisty psychological thriller about an academy for \u201ctroubled teens,\u201d run by Evelyn Wade (Toni Collette<\/a>), and the surrounding town that holds a whole lot of secrets.<\/p>\n Evelyn uses questionable methods to get the students to remember traumatic events from their past to prepare them for a ritual called \u201cthe Leap,\u201d but the process is eventually turned on her in the end when Alex (Martin) injects her with a too-large portion of the drugs used, resulting in a haunting scene that shows Evelyn reacting to the psychedelic overload.<\/p>\n But did the injection actually kill her? \u201cWe actually did a lot of takes which were far more intense and it felt like Evelyn was gone forever,\u201d Collette tells TV Insider. \u201cBut it\u2019s kind of left a little open-ended.\u201d<\/p>\n Martin, who created the show, confirms, \u201cI think [Evelyn\u2019s] still in there.\u201d<\/p>\n Alex is a cop who\u2019s new to the town of Tall Pines. He moved there with his pregnant wife, Laura (Sarah Gadon<\/a>), who used to be a student at Tall Pines Academy and has a troubled history with Evelyn, memories of which she unlocks throughout the series. It doesn\u2019t take long for Alex to notice that things are a little off at the Academy and within the town in general (for example, Tall Pines has no children.)<\/p>\n As he investigates, with help from two of the school\u2019s teens, Abbie (Sydney Topliffe<\/a>) and Leila (Alyvia Alyn Lind<\/a>), he makes an enemy out of Evelyn, who wants to \u201cLeap\u201d him before he can find out the full truth of what she\u2019s up to. When Alex escapes, he\u2019s shocked to find that Laura has given birth to their child and is essentially sharing the baby with the rest of the people in the town. \u201cIt\u2019s everyone\u2019s. It\u2019s the only way to break the pattern,\u201d Laura insists.<\/p>\n While Alex seems horrified to see that his wife is essentially taking on Evelyn\u2019s leadership role in a new form, he ultimately makes the decision to stay with her and their baby in Tall Pines. He helps Abbie escape by leaving her his car so she can leave town, but he doesn\u2019t join her for the getaway.<\/p>\n \u201cI knew that I wanted the show to escalate to something pretty surreal and almost sort of a parabole by the end, or a weird myth,\u201d Martin explains. \u201cAlex is a deeply flawed character who desperately wants acceptance, and I really understand his choice, in a way. He compromises a lot of his integrity and his morals, but he ultimately wants to stay with his wife and baby. I\u2019m curious for what would happen for them in the future. I think their kid is going to be pretty messed up.\u201d<\/p>\n As for whether or not we\u2019ll get to explore the family\u2019s future in another season of\u00a0Wayward<\/em>, that\u2019s still up in the air. \u201cI was told it was a miniseries, but there\u2019s definitely more story to tell, I think,\u201d Martin admits. \u201cWe left all those characters in crisis, basically.\u201d<\/p>\n Collette adds that the cast \u201ctalks about\u201d returning for a Season 2. \u201cIt\u2019s endlessly intriguing,\u201d she says. \u201cEndlessly. So many places it could go, for sure.\u201d As Gadon also points out, \u201cNothing\u2019s tied up in a neat little bow.\u201d<\/p>\n
