{"id":2048888,"date":"2025-09-25T11:10:31","date_gmt":"2025-09-25T11:10:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/?p=2048888"},"modified":"2025-09-25T11:10:31","modified_gmt":"2025-09-25T11:10:31","slug":"pittsburghs-new-music-festival-brings-back-the-frampton-brothers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/pittsburghs-new-music-festival-brings-back-the-frampton-brothers\/","title":{"rendered":"Pittsburgh&#8217;s new music festival brings back the Frampton Brothers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The prequel to the first annual <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thegovernmentcenter.com\/events\/monongahela-pop-festival\">Monongahela Pop Festival<\/a>, set for Oct. 3 and 4 at the Government Center, is a feel-good story.<\/p>\n<p>It starts with a book: earlier this year, founder\/organizer Mike Shanley read \u201cWeighted Down,\u201d a biography of guitarist Skip Spence, whose band, Moby Grape, played the fabled Monterey Pop Festival in 1967.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside>\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<\/p>\n<p>Soon after, Shanley, bassist for the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/HarryVonZells\/\">Harry Von Zells<\/a>, a local band, started to plan the Von Zells\u2019 annual show to celebrate his October birthday. Maybe Hoy would like to join them in October?<\/p>\n<p>Then, like any good impresario, Shanley started to think big:\u00a0 Would Ed Masley of the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/fbmusic.bandcamp.com\/\">Frampton Brothers<\/a>, one of the biggest local bands of the late \u201880s and \u201890s, want to reunite the original Framptons lineup for what was morphing into more than a birthday party? Masley, a former Post-Gazette pop music critic, left town in 2007 to work for the Arizona Republic and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/azcentral.com\">azcentral.com<\/a>. Former bandmates live in Baltimore, Arizona and California. Shanley knew it was a big ask, but he asked anyway.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone said yes. And Shanley realized he had the makings of a pop festival.<\/p>\n<p>Why pop and not rock?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPop music covers a wide range of stuff but to me, at its core are hooks \u2013 things that grab your ear and feel catchy,\u201d Shanley said. \u201c The Framptons are definitely poppy. The last Framptons iteration, featuring Masley, Lally, Ray Vasko and Bob Hoag, will play part of a set too. That\u2019s a lot of Framptons.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt truly is a stupid band name, but they were like brothers to me,\u201d Masley said. \u201cThe Frampton Brothers were a huge part of my life for many years. I miss making music with my friends.\u201d There\u2019s even talk of a reunion album, he added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>With all that talent, Shanley was able to expand to a two-day event, stacking the lineup with local favorites, including the psychedelic-pop <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thegarmentdistrictmusic.com\/\">The Garment District<\/a> (including NEXT\u2019s own Jennifer Baron), the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/thedenalis\/?hl=en\">Denalis<\/a> (featuring former members of the Mt. McKinleys, Steel Miners and Full Counts) and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/igorrecords90.bandcamp.com\/album\/rosie-jean-b-w-the-source-of-the-river\">Pink Gin Marimbas<\/a>, who join Greg Hoy and the Boys on Friday, Oct. 3. In addition to the Government Center bar, the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/kinderbeingcafe\/?hl=en\">Kinder Being Cafe<\/a> will be open for coffee and snacks in celebration of its first birthday. \u201cIt\u2019s a double party,\u201d Shanley said.<\/p>\n<p>Geography nerds might quibble that the Government Center is near the banks of the Allegheny, not Monongahela River.
