That makes the renowned crime show the second-longest-running live-action series on primetime TV, behind only its first offshoot, <i>Law &amp; Order: SVU<\/i>, with 27 years of ser<span class=\"s3\">vice. (A quarter century is especial<\/span>ly sweet, given that <i>L&amp;O<\/i> took an 11-year break, ending with the show\u2019s celebrated 2022 rebirth.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cWe\u2019ll try to make this a season worthy of the legacy,\u201d says showrunner <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/people\/rick-eid\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Rick Eid;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Rick Eid<\/a>, adding that there\u2019s the possibility of a past favorite or two returning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><span class=\"s3\">But first, something new is in order. Season 25 begins with a rare break from the tradition that each episode opens with a new unsolved murder. This time, shares <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/people\/odelya-halevi\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Odelya Halevi;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Odelya Halevi<\/a>, who plays Assistant District Attorney Samantha Maroun, \u201cThe episode is a continuation of last season\u2019s story, and the first scene finds Maroun boxing, letting her anger out and dealing with the fear of what might happen to her.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Fans recall last season\u2019s cliffhanger: Carter Mills (Jordan Cox), the man Maroun was certain raped and killed her sister years earlier, was acquitted of the crime and then turned up murdered. Knowing Maroun was once close to shooting Mills, her confidant, fellow ADA Nolan Price (<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/people\/hugh-dancy\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Hugh Dancy;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Hugh Dancy<\/a>), came to her home asking if she did it. Her response? Samantha Maroun &#8212; (Photo by: Will Hart\/NBC)<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Will Hart \/ NBC<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><span class=\"s3\">The ADA is right to fear. \u201cThe evidence points her way, and she is interrogated,\u201d says Eid. \u201cPrice is sympathetic, but she\u2019s a suspect.\u201d No matter the outcome, Eid adds, \u201cThere\u2019s potential for a rift.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><span class=\"s3\">Does this all signal that Maroun may be on the way out? <i>L&amp;O<\/i> is <\/span><span class=\"s4\">famous for cast changes, and Me<\/span><span class=\"s3\">hcad Brooks\u2019 Det. Jalen Shaw is no longer on the roster, making him the third <\/span><span class=\"s4\">detective to exit since the show re<\/span><span class=\"s3\">turned. (The explanation: He transferred to another precinct.) His departure leaves Det. Vince Riley (<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/people\/reid-scott\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Reid Scott;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Reid Scott<\/a>) to partner with rotating detectives and an accommodating Lt. Jessica Brady (<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/people\/maura-tierney\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Maura Tierney;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Maura Tierney<\/a>) until a replacement arrives. (That appears to be <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/people\/david-ajala\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:David Ajala;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">David Ajala<\/a>, who <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/entertainment\/articles\/law-order-sets-premiere-date-195542307.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:joins as a series regular;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\">joins as a series regular<\/a>, TV Insider has learned.) <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><span class=\"s3\">\u201cRiley is working very closely with Brady,\u201d Scott says, \u201cand that\u2019s a lot of fun because they\u2019ve come away from getting under each other\u2019s skin to really respecting each other. She\u2019s giving him a fair amount of latitude.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><span class=\"s3\">\u201cBrady and Riley are also put in this precarious position of having to investigate one of their own,\u201d Scott adds. \u201cThey have a lot of respect for Maroun, and it\u2019s uncomfortable to look at her as a suspect. They approach it with a certain amount of grace because this is their friend, but they have to catch a killer.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><span class=\"s3\">Viewers might also notice more home-based stories in this landmark season. In Episode 2, says Eid, DA Nick Baxter (<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/people\/tony-goldwyn\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Tony Goldwyn;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Tony Goldwyn<\/a>) \u201cis politically pressured by an old friend to handle the case of a murdered lawyer in a [less-than-ethical] way.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">And what would a celebratory 25th be without an anticipated crossover between <i>L&amp;O<\/i> and <i>SVU<\/i>?
