Jimmy Kimmel<\/a> says President Donald Trump<\/a> \u201cmight have to release the Epstein files to distract us from this\u201d after his efforts to \u201ccancel\u201d him \u201cbackfired bigly.\u201d<\/p>\n Tuesday, Sept. 23, Kimmel\u2019s show returned, albeit not in all markets<\/a>, after being yanked off the air for remarks we already pointed out were wholly innocuous<\/a>. While Kimmel did use a portion of his monologue to clarify those remarks, saying it was \u201cnever my intention to make light of\u201d the fatal shooting of Charlie Kirk, he also made it clear just how crucial it is to fight not only for the protection of free speech at large, but to ensure, specifically, that our country retains a free press.<\/p>\n \u201cWell, I do tonight,\u201d Kimmel, who was visibly emotional at multiple points in Tuesday night\u2019s monologue, said after playing a clip of Trump purporting that his show had no ratings. \u201cYou almost have to feel sorry for him. He tried his best to cancel me. Instead, he forced millions of people to watch the show. That backfired bigly. As Kimmel pointed out, Trump \u201cwas somehow able to squeeze Colbert out of CBS,\u201d and he\u2019s publicly called for similar fates for others in the late-night space.<\/p>\n \u201cWe have to speak out against this because he\u2019s not stopping,\u201d Kimmel said. \u201cIt\u2019s not just comedy. He\u2019s gunning for our journalists too. He\u2019s suing them, he\u2019s bullying them. Over the weekend, his foxy friend Pete Hegseth announced a new policy that requires journalists with Pentagon press credentials to sign a pledge promising not to report information that hasn\u2019t been explicitly authorized for release.\u201d<\/p>\n Kimmel continued, \u201cThat includes unclassified information. They wanna pick and choose what the news is.
